See, I keep meaning to type up a blog on it, but I guess I'll just put it here.
I'm pretty sure I was playing a different game then the one that's sweeping the nation. I could not have been more bored. I had to force myself to play what little I did. I just don't get it. I'm a fan of the genre, and I understand you aren't going to be battling dragons 30 times your size 3 minutes in, but it was soooooo boring.
It was just so much walking and repetitive killing.

So I probably should've asked this before I ordered it, but has anyone ever used or considered buying a gaming keypad? And by anyone I guess I mean Jeremy or Bret if he ever comes here anymore. I just ordered a Wolfking Warrior from ThinkGeek. I'm hoping it's easier to use than the laptop keyboard plus I don't want to wear out WSAD on the lappy. I still have about 40 lvls to go for my first character.

Well I haven't CSed with it, only WOWed. I think it puts in a better ergonomic position, but it also allows me to now play for consecutive hours without moving any part of my left hand other than my fingers which might be worse. It's a lot easier to get to all the number keys now as well as hit spacebar. I guess it'd be easier to get to the function keys too although I don't think I've done that yet. It also has push button volume control which I often prefer to the HP laptop scroll volume. So all in all it's maybe not quite as cool as I was hoping for, but I'd say it was worth it.

To pwn n00bs into oblivion whilst gaining rep, xp, and awesome gear. I'm assuming it's kind of like other role playing games, but I never really played any before this one. It's fun to play with Jeremy until he quits, but I'm in a couple guilds and group up with my brothers every now and then.
Mostly you do quests and kill monsters. But there is a variety of specializations and stuff that keep it pretty interesting.
It's general purpose is to waste time, and it's very good at that. But I might as well be doing something while watching football anyway right?
PackOne - First I limp to the side like my leg was broken.
01/06/2008 @ 06:16:30 PM
I have never played any kind of role playing game. So the pwn'ing of n00bs mean quite little to me. I read that ten of thousands are playing? Is the game just one big universe - ala I create my own dude and build him up, run around alot, and try to avoid death from those ten thousand others that do know what is going on?

You're all either doing your own thing or working together to kill NPC's.
You can dual (I think) but you have to purposely agree to dual (I think) at least that's the way it is in most games.
At any rate the focus isn't everyone killing everyone else.

I think there's actually like 9 million players, but there are different servers (like 20 or 30, idk) so not everyone is playing in the same world at that time. And there's 2 main game types, one where you mostly fight the world and do quests, and one where you more fight the other online players. But in either game type you can still do both. I didn't know what I was doing at all when I started.

As far as I know Counter Strike Source is a free mod for half life 2, but I can't find anything to confirm that or deny it. I don't think I payed for it, but I also got HL2 right away and might have been grandfathered in.
I can find lots of places where counter strike costs money, but that's because you can buy it as a stand alone game.
Team Fortress 2 is a freakin' blast, and Portal is one of the funniest/best games I've played in a while. Its only negative is that it's pretty short.

You can get CS:S for free, just download Steam, then download it from the games menu. There are a few you can get for free.
I might go get the orange box, partially because of the Episodes One and Two, then because you say TF 2 is "a freakin' blast"

Well, CS:S isn't free, you must have HL2 which would allow you to login anywhere and download CS:S later.
Episodes One and Two are good. I'd say worth $15-$20 each, on their own. TF2 is worth the price of admission by itself. Portal's stand alone value is hurt by the fact that it's so short, but I've never played a funnier game. (It's dark humor, but humor none the less.)
The only thing that hurt the value for me was already having HL2, even though they allow you to give away the "duplicate" copy you paid for to someone else. HL2 is quite possibly the best game ever made, and is also easily worth the $50.
All in all it's a no brainer, unless you don't like first person shooter with puzzles style games.
Edit: Just for helpfulness.
HL2 & Episode One & Episode Two - One Player - HL2 Deathmatch is available as a multiplayer mod to play against others. CS:S and other mods are available - many free. HL2 is really the door to endless gaming.
Portal - One player
TF2 - Only multiplayer, fairly new game so there are lots of noobs and there's not a huge uptake time. Spy is the only class that might take some advanced finessing, I'm pretty good at the game and am a pretty awful spy.

Also, just for helpfulness/clarification (since it's what the thread was originally about). World of Warcraft has a 10 day trial, so you can see if you like it or not. You can play day and night for 10 days in a limitless trial.
I hated it, but mainly because I didn't know how to do anything and was alone all the time. Now that Alex knows what he's doing (like how voice chat works) it might be more fun. If a few of us join maybe we can start a nutcan guild.

I, for one, did the nerdy online role playing thing before, and all I got was ostracism. I played Vampires- the Masquerade: Redemption (or VtMR). It was pretty cool, I dug it.
If I were to have enough time to play my HL2 mods (actually, the newer Vampires- VtM:Bloodlines- is based on the HL2 engine) I might try it. Post the info please.

I love Diablo II, Final Fantasy, Crono Trigger, etc and the basic premise of role playing games. I just didn't like WOW for WOW specific reasons.
Half the game is just running from place to place, so much so that there's a "just run until I push this button again" autopilot-type button. It also took the repetitive nature of RPGs and cranked it up to eleven.
I'm really not sure what information Carl wants posted.

Well, I have made me decision ... and unfortunately for me, it is going to be none of the above. I usually get a heavy dose of motion sickness from most first person type games. I just don't want to shell out the dough for something I can't play for more than five minutes. Maybe I'll donate the savings.

It does get a little boring at times, yet I've been playing like 6 months and there's a number of things that I haven't even attempted to do yet. So it's tedious at times but there are different things to do. My main is only lvl 60, so I haven't even been to the new continent that comes with the Burning Crusade expansion (although I should go there now), plus I haven't done any arena battles, raids, etc.
I've found that starting multiple characters helps keep it more interesting too. I have 5 now, all of different classes and the strategy for each class is quite different so if I get bored of constant melee I can switch to spell casting or healing or balanced or just be in a different area. Plus they are all different professions, so instead of getting drops that I would just sell before I can send mail between my characters and have one make stuff for another and such.
Hmm...I really spend too much time playing this. I hate technology.

I do too, terribly, and these aren't a problem for me. Typically it happens if I'm running around in circles in an unknown place, but it doesn't effect me once I learn the maps and know what to expect around the corner.

Edit: In other words to go from trial to "real" do you have to pay for more than the first month? Can you even get just one month?

I think it's $20 to buy the game. Although I think at the time I did that anyway it got me 30 days of game time too. Or did I get a free 30 days for paying for 6 months? I'm not sure, the website isn't the greatest for finding these things out. I think it was for paying for 6 months right away.
I did just find out that if I refer someone and they pay for a month I get a free 30 days. So if anyone is going to start I can hook you up with a recruitment email ;)
Edit: You can pay by the month.
