More like you thought you were above and beyond the rest of us in game picking. As you can see, I'm far superior in that aspect (one game) and have picked games even after the Packers were out of it. |

oh, well, winning percentage. I've passed on certain playoff games after devastating losses when I was too depressed to think about football. I also passed on the Packers Super Bowl out of possible superstition that somehow not picking would cancel out any effect my pick might have on the outcome. I'm also guessing that if you exclude games that involve the Packers or the Vikings, that the numbers would be even more interesting. Matt, for instance, never picks against the Vikings, and the Vikings have been a sub .500 team during that span. Me, on the other hand, usually pick the Packers, and the Packers are a large amount above .500, giving me what you might call a home-team bias. Although I pick against "my team" more than most of at least the senior staffers, so that could play into it as well. |

What I meant by "i pick the packers (my team) and some pick the vikings (your team)" is that because "my team" happens to be better record wise, my wins might be schewed high because of my home team bias. The Packer fans on this site that are inclined to pick their team out of preference rather than reason benefit from that team simply having a better record overall, while the Viking fans that are inclined to pick their team for the same reason are at a disadvantage simply because the Vikings have a worse record. For instance, while I've been making picks, the packers have gone 68-35. I pick the Packers to win 88% of the time, and I've only been wrong about either win or loss a total of 33 times, or 32% of the time. Matt on the other hand picks the Vikings every time. During his time picking the Vikings are 79-86. Matt picks incorrectly 52% of the time. Now compared to Matt, I'm not sure if eliminating the Vikings and Packer games would even the numbers out, but clearly when comparing me to Matt (and also noting that Matt almost never picks the Packers either; I am rather successful in picks involving the Vikings, particularly compared to Matt's, Jon's, or Jeremy's picks involving the Packers, so my "bias" might only applies to the Packers), there is a major bias that would make my numbers artificially higher and Matt's artificially lower simply because of the difference in overall records of the two teams that we call ourselves fans of. I'll use this. Jon, who has never picked against the Vikings, is only 16 wins behind me in the era known heretofore as Scotttime. If Jon was as good at picking games involving the Vikings as I have been* (i have a .663 winning percentage picking viking games), he would have 52 more wins overall. Compared to the overall records, Scotttime accounts for about 60% of the overall time span. So if we use that number, Jon could possibly have accounted for 31 more wins if he picked the Vikings as an unbiased observer rather than a bleeds-purple-and-gold vikings fan. Conclusion: I probably am not quite as good as my record would indicate, and Sarah (whether she wants to admit it or now) is in the same boat. *I have picked the Vikings to Win 44 times and lose 54 time. so I've picked the Vikings win 44.9% of the time, which is just slightly lower than their overall winning percentage over than time span (45-53). In other words, evidence would suggest that I am fairly unbiased in picking games involving the Vikings. |

http://espn.go.com/nfl/preview12/story/_/id/8295463/espn-experts-nfl-predictions-2012 9 of the 16 espn "experts" have picked the Packers to win the Super Bowl. Clearly that means that they're screwed. It looks like Bob McGinn's 10-6 forecast might be more realistic afterall. Although they won the Super Bowl as a 10-6 team 2 years ago. |
Sarah - How do you use these things? 09/05/2012 @ 07:02:40 PM |

I pick against the Packers if I think they're going to lose, and pick the Vikings when I think they're going to win. That's how you've got to do picks. We can't say someone is hypothetically better just because they shouldn't be picking their team. That's their prerogative, no matter how it plays out. |
Scott - Get Up! Get outta here! Gone! 09/05/2012 @ 08:34:29 PM |

---|---|---|
So there's only been 10 times in the last 10 years when you thought the Packers might lose? And Jon has never legitimately thought the Vikings might lose? And really, regarding Sarah and me, picking against the Packers when it's fitting might actually make our win totals higher, so there's that caveat I guess. Well, whatever your justification, your ability to "think the packers are going to win" isn't eschewed in any way shape or form by the fact that you happen to bleed that team's colors, right? It might be Jon's prerogative to pick the vikings every single week for 10+ straight years, and if we judge based solely on wins, then I got him beat. But based on the fact that he has not once picked against him, I'd say there's something that is causing him to pick that team in a biased way, making those picks a little less legit, thus I'd be be somewhat reasonable saying he might be better or more equal to me in making picks. Now I'd say the bias is for you and me doesn't include the Vikings. Although even if my picks for the Packers are legit, Jon's and Matt's picks for the vikings make their numbers worse than they probably would be if they were picking with their heads rather than their hearts. |

So I guess I'll throw in the obligatory "we own the 49ers" line in here. The Packers have beaten the 49ers 8 straight times dating back to November, 1999, and they have won 13 of the last 14 matchups. You have to go back to when George H.W. Bush was president of these here united states to find the last time the 49ers won in the state of Wisconsin, nearly 22 years ago. |

The announcers made a comment about Jarret Bush and getting turned around, and I thought to myself "you could probably use a lot of different prefaces that ultimately end up with "and then Jarret Bush got turned around", and they don't all have to refer to football. |

You know, I really need to be more true to my rational thought process rather than my wishful thinking. I have a packers schedule on my cube wall at work, and a couple weeks ago, I went through and marked off games I thought the Packers would lose. The 2 games I marked down? At the Giants and home against the 49ers. If I had just consulted my at work packer schedule I would have been right about this week. |
