Apparently ESPN's upset predictor puts the chances of a road team victory in this order: Saints, Texans, Giants, Broncos. The saints are actually favored, so technically, would a 49ers victory be considered an "upset", or a "knocking off" of the Saints?

Really digging into the Numbers
The Giants were 1-5 in games during the regular season when teams used 24 or more offensive personnel combinations*.
The Packers used less than 24 offensive personnel combinations only once the entire season. The Packers averaged 30 different combinations per game.

*offensive personnel combinations, for the purposes of this stat, refers to WR, TE, RB, and FB combinations; it does not count changes in the offensive line or to the quarterback.

Saints-49ers; telling stat about Drew Brees and his performance on the road: He threw 37 TDs and 8 interceptions in his 8 home games, while throwing only 9 touchdowns and 6 interceptions in his 8 road games this season. Drew Brees is a different QB outdoors/away from home.

Apparently catching the ball and holding on to the ball are important aspects to consider when attempting to win a football game.

The Packers didn't make plays, the Giants did. Ok, other than that, things actually seemed to be playing right into the hands of exactly the type of game that could have easily resulted in a Packers blowout. The Giants were producing virtually no pressure at all from their "elite" front 4 that had been talked about all week. Rodgers had all day to throw, and when he didn't find receivers he was able to scramble and gain a lot of yards with his feet. And he had receivers open. He admittedly missed on two passes badly, one was a sure touchdown in the first qtr to Jennings, another was a 3rd and 5 to Finley in the third qtr. But if the receivers don't drop 8 passes and the Packers don't fumble the ball 3 times (Kuhn fumbled for the first time in his career, Rodgers lost a fumble for the first time this year), things are different, and I think the Packers win going away. The plays they were making all season that put teams away early never came to be. The Giants were making them instead.

Don't misconstrue this into a "if the Packers didn't play horribly they would have played better" comment. I'm trying to explain the unexplainable. Everything that was talked about all week about what needed to happen for the Packers to win happened. No one forsaw every receiver dropping at least one drive killing ball or the Packers turning the ball over 4 times. It was as uncharacteristic of a game as you could have possibly imagined, and there is no way to explain what just happened, seemingly.

Final thought: When General Pickett was asked if he put the blame on Gen. Lee for the destruction of his division at Gettysburg during his infamous charge, Pickett responded, "I think the Federal troops may have had something to do with it." In other words, I'm not one to disrespect the victors by blaming the losers instead of praising the victors; the Giants won. Mourn, sulk, moan, and move on. emoticonemoticonemoticonemoticon

I don't think the packers were a few drops away from running away with the game. They should have had 14 fewer points than they did. I also don't think it was that "unforeseeable." I think I've been saying all year that the Packers would be better off on the road with their precision passing game, and Jordy Nelson flat out said as much before the game.

That said, one thing that's been bugging me: EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. a bye team loses a game in which they look anything short of "themselves" people fire up the "bye week rust" nonsense. First of all, it's one of those things where for the most part it's true, except when it isn't. Everyone just ignores all the times the bye team wins. Secondly, isn't a more plausible explanation that a combination of 2 more weeks into harsh weather, going from a regular season of rolling 4 win teams, to playing a playoff team that beat another playoff team, maybe being a good team in a bad division, rather than a top 2 team, and a myriad of other reasons, not to mention the fact that sometimes teams just have a bad game, is to blame?

I don't know why in the world some people, who consider coming off a bye in the regular season to be a massive advantage, think the more plausible explanation is that missing that one game causes these guys who have been playing football since diapers to forget how to run routes and throw/catch the ball.

I had something to write, but it's not worth it. The Packers just played bad. The Packers offense made the Giants defense look much better than they actually are. It's one thing to not be clicking, it's another thing to be make such huge gaffes like fumbling and dropping perfectly thrown balls all day long.
