MattI really think they can win this.
SarahI cannot emphasize how much I would love to see Favre throw the game losing interception. Not that that'll happen and I probably shouldn't say that to begin with, but a girl can't help herself.
JonOvertime heartbreak? Embarrassing shutout? We've had some experiences. I don't really care about making predictions. I'm ready to watch some football. |

I can't believe all of these crybabys that refuse to play in the probowl all because thay lost in the playoffs. boo hoo..... get over it. I guess one good thing came out of it, mcnabb gets to play in his 8th probowl. now we got nine eagles and nine cowboys all on the same side of the ball. there is no way the nfc loses this game. I predict a blowout....... |

I know the Pro Bowl was last week, so it's a little late for the smack talk, but McNabb looked awful. Plus the NFC East clearly did not help the NFC (although I didn't watch the whole game and only kind of know that the AFC won). |

Deal with having a 55" TV delivered from an online purchase to save $150, or just go to Worst Buy and get it over with? http://www.buydig.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=E1LG55LH40 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/LG+-+55%22+Class+/+1080p+/+120Hz+/+LCD+HDTV/9318687.p?id=1218084031293&skuId=9318687 Hmm...according to their website the closest one would be in Appleton anyway, buy I was in there today and then had one on display. |

Jon Wrote - 01/31/2009 @ 05:01:47 PM http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3874838 Here's something I'd like to negative nut. Cris Carter STILL not inducted into the HOF. Granted, before I complain too much, Randall McDaniel did deservedly get in. But how can Cris Carter not be put in right away? I heard today that the reason he wasn't put in last year was likely because no WR ever has gotten in on the first time and they are waiting to put Rice in there on his first ballot. So that solved that mystery. But why not now? Football's whole process is pretty bogus anyway. Not to mention, they've shown over and over again that it's better to be famous than good. Better to be part of one or two championship teams than put up ridiculous stats your entire career. In fact, they've almost shown a complete disdain for any numerical representation of someone's performance. Cris Carter retired as statistically the best receiver EVER that isn't named Jerry Rice. And even if people had taken the time to watch 10% of the games he played in, they'd know it wasn't even the statistics that made him so good. He was just unbelievably talented and productive. He made his teams better. Did no one notice that Minnesota made the playoffs virtually every year while he was there? And he was basically the anchor of the offense. You know how many quarterbacks came through Minnesota in those years? 583. Look it up. He was consistently good year after year in a consistently changing situation. Look, guys like Jerry Rice and Marvin Harrison are obviously good. You can't argue that. But you know what? They had Montana, Young, and Manning throwing to them for virtually their entire career. Carter had some good passers, but they changed every year, and often in the middle of the year. Rich Gannon, Wade Wilson, Sean Salisbury, Jim McMahon, Warren Moon, Brad Johnson, Randall Cunningham, Jeff George, Daunte Culpepper, plus Spergeon Wynn and Todd Bouman. Those are the starters. That's 1991-2001. Sure a few of those guys are pretty talented, but can you imagine changing quarterbacks that many times and still being as good as anyone in the game? Put it this way. He led the entire NFL in TD receptions three different years. 1995, 1997, 1999. Each of those seasons, with just a year between each, had a different qb as the predominant starter in Minnesota. Warren Moon, Brad Johnson, Jeff George -- didn't matter. Cris Carter found a way to catch more tds than anyone each time. And he did it with as good a set of hands that have ever caught a football, and with ridiculous body control. Yeah, he'll be in the Hall some day. But some day should have been last year, or certainly this year. The Pro Football Hall of Fame should be embarrassed by the consistently poor job they do at electing players. The above is a quote from a year ago on our SB thread. In case you missed it, Cris Carter was not elected to the Hall of Fame this year either. If you want to know how ridiculous this is, please read what I wrote last year. Also, I will add to the argument a bit. Michael Irvin was elected to the HOF in his third year of eligibility. Cris Carter was just denied election in his third year. Cris Carter has 351 MORE receptions than Irvin for his career. In touchdowns, Irving had 65TDs for his career. Carter had 130!! That's right, Carter caught TWICE as many touchdowns as Irvin ever did. Carter was also a 1st team all-pro twice. Irvin once. Carter was a pro bowler 8 years, Irvin 5. So, basically, to sum it up, the Pro Football Hall of Fame election process still has no credibility at all. |

Chris Carter didn't win 3 super bowls, so clearly he is an inferior athlete who deserves not to share the same honor as an average receiver like Irving who was on good teams. Don't come here with your empirical data proving that Chris Carter is mathematically twice as good as Michael Irving when you know full well that the hall of fame clearly is not for individual stats as much as it is for the teams you played for. That's just fuzzy math.* *clearly I am joking. |

It's like you have Jerry Rice...Cris Carter.......Tim Brown... and then way down on the list of great receivers is everyone else. I'm a little unsure of why Irvin got in before Carter, maybe it was a weaker class during his 3rd year of eligibility. It's not right that they're doing this so Rice gets in first or whatever. I know Carter had issues when he was first in the league, but Irvin continues to have issues. He apparently pissed off the wrong person. Obviously I'm not a Carter fan, but if you look at statistics, it's kind of ridic. |

I've never followed the football hall of fame but this is pretty amazing to me. 3rd in receptions, 8th in yards, and 4th in TD is first ballot no question. For comparison, Ted Williams is 8th in average, 18th in home runs, 17th in runs, and 13th in RBI's. He's probably not a first ballot guy if they started over. |

The problem with all Halls of Fame is that "bad" press is better than no press. I think they do stuff like this on purpose to get attention. It's the only logical explanation.

LeBron-Howard McDonald's commercial makes an early bid for best commercial, and the game hasn't even started yet. Also, 13 straight times the NFC has won the coin toss. Clearly, winning the coin toss is almost a guarantee that you will lose the game. In other words: Sorry Saints fans. |

Not only was the Tim Tebow commercial not as controversial as people made it out to be, it was also about the most corny use of $2.5 million I could have imagined. So instead of the anti-abortion crowd getting a commercial that stirs up controversy and discussion, they get a commercial that will at best not be remembered and at worst will lessen whatever impact they hoped it would have and almost be seen as a joke.

That overturned call completely blows up the conversation we had about the Greg Jennings touchdown against the Bears where the player must maintain posession while going to the ground. If the call in this game was a completion, I demand that the ESPN writer (and Jeremy for that matter) retract their arguments about the Jennings call be correct. Jennings had posession and then had it knocked out, and then fell. This guy was falling, made the catch, then continued falling, and then had the ball knocked away. I want justice! |

Going back to Super Bowl 32, I think I have correctly predicted/rooted for the correct team a grand total of two times since then. I was rooting for the Patriots in their first of 3 super bowl wins, and I was rooting for the Giants when they beat the Patriots. Other than that, I have been stacking up the L's. Prior to that, I think it went this way: The very first super bowl I actually remember was when the Redskins beat the Bills, and then I correctly rooted for the Cowboys the first two times they beat the Bills, and then I wanted the 49ers to beat the Chargers, and the Packers obviously to beat the Patriots. The Break down of my predictions: Age 8-13 5-1 record in Super Bowls Age 14-26 2-10 record Clearly my best years are behind me. |

So instead of the anti-abortion crowd getting a commercial that stirs up controversy and discussion, they get a commercial that will at best not be remembered and at worst will lessen whatever impact they hoped it would have and almost be seen as a joke. Maybe they thought if they made a commercial that was lame enough that people would talk about how lame it was. Generally speaking, advocacy groups aren't allowed to air commercials. (Peta and Moveon.org were turned down in 2004 by CBS) Most of the hub-bub was about why they would now accept this ad, while also turning down the commercial below for a gay dating site. (Which, as it turns out, has a nice tie in with us here at the can.) I don't think I agree that the commercial below falls outside the bounds of the decency guidlines they had set up at CBS, considering there were 7 Godaddy commercials that all ended with a girl tearing her shirt off and telling you where to do to see the unrated version, however, I think it's a bit clearer now why the Tebow commercial was allowed. And here I had a big rant planned. We were all still settling into Super Bowl mode and didn't expect it so early. Not only was it a total impactless commercial, no one even realized that we were seeing THE commercial until Tim appeared in the final seconds, because, oddly enough, we have no idea what Tim Tebow's mom looks like. In the end they pretty much used their "enemies" against themselves. The controversy itself spread the story, the commercial was a 30 waste of time where a mom rambled about how she worried about her son. |

Simmons' take, "They're showing replays of Lance Moore's 2-point conversion. I've seen this rule called both ways and there's no rhyme or reason to it -- sometimes they give it to the receiver, sometimes they play the "no, he didn't keep possession for long enough when he hit the ground" card. It really depends on the game and which team the NFL wants to win. You can't tell me differently." http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/100208&sportCat=nfl |

In a way, this thing is like a chess match between Peyton Manning and Rex Ryan. But in a way, it's even more like a football game.
