Vikings 17 @ Cardinals 30 |
MattWe should see some points scored here. Minnesota 42 - Arizona 24.
SarahNathan Poole. | |
JeremyThe last time these teams met was last year, and it was a romp times 3, and that was without Farvin. Still, this is supposedly be a proving ground of sorts to those in the media, seeing at the schedule has been pretty light on the NFC North this year. However, the Cardinals are streaky. One of 2 things will happen: 1) The Vikings win, everyone who said this game will prove something will change their minds and decide it was just a normal "down" game for the Cardinals. 2) The Vikings lose, and everyone declares the ride over.Look, I'm not saying this team is destined to win the Superbowl, or that anything less than that would even be a particular disappointment. However, it seems odd to me that everyone is writing about how Indy just gets lucky and pulls it out in the end, is full of weaknesses, but does "just enough", etc. Likewise, that the Saints are having a lightning in a bottle type season. They've got talent, to be sure, but not this much. Their d went from shaky to lights out with little change, etc. Meanwhile, they talk endlessly about how the Vikings are nearly flawless, they have no obvious holes, and have strengths where you need strength. Which of these 3 teams is everyone "in the know" expecting the bottom to fall out on? The Vikings, of course.
JonDouble Blackout!! No texts or calls on this one either. Last year's game against Arizona was a dominant win. It wouldn't be a huge surprise to see that again. |
Ravens 14 @ Packers 27 |
MattI think people are too down on the Ravens, and maybe a little too high on the Packers.
SarahLet's keep rollin'!
JeremyThings sure can turn around quickly in the NFL. The Packers looked dead just a few weeks ago, now they find themselves at 7-2 against teams not named the Minnesota Vikings. Of course if the knock on the Vikings is that they "haven't beaten anyone good yet" this goes double for the Packers, who have only beaten the Cowboys, who are an up and down team, and, frankly, laid an egg that day.

40 year old hall of fame QB seemingly making a decision that will tarnish his long standing legacy is in the midst of possibly the best year of his amazing career, enhancing his legacy by mythical proportions in the process? Yeah, nothing fascinating about that. |

"Which of these 3 teams is everyone "in the know" expecting the bottom to fall out on? The Vikings, of course." Maybe this is why: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4716172 And as far as the Arizona game, the "quality of the test" depends on if Warner plays or not. |

Huh, well people do speed like crazy there, though I think 100+ might be pushing it a tad. |

100 is flying, especially for Minnesota! In and around tampa, the "pace" is usually above 80. Minnesota and Wisconsin is a lot slower generally. someone driving 100+ in Minneapolis is going to stick out a lot. "Which of these 3 teams is everyone "in the know" expecting the bottom to fall out on? The Vikings, of course." I still think people are expecting Favre to stop being superman at somepoint and end this season like he did last season. |

Scott Wrote - Today @ 04:19:16 PM "Which of these 3 teams is everyone "in the know" expecting the bottom to fall out on? The Vikings, of course." I still think people are expecting Favre to stop being superman at somepoint and end this season like he did last season. Sure, but the Saints and Colts need their QB's to be supermen. The Vikings don't. Take Peyton Manning off the Colts and that's a 3-4 win team. (They won 5 straight games where they trailed in the 4th quarter) Take Brees off the Saints and that's probably a .500 team. Take Favre off the Vikings and they would be where right now? 8-3? 7-4? They were 6-5 last year at this point, and that was the bad stretch. (They won 5 of their last 6, most of which thanks to Jackson, who also played well in the loss.) Now, granted Favre might have a higher chance of being hurt, given his age, but I just wish these media guys wold be consistent. You can't write one article saying that what will hurt Favre's MVP chances the most is that the Vikings don't need him like the other teams need their QB's, and then follow that up with an article about how the Vikings are a 40 year old, surgically repaired, shoulder away from certain doom. I mean honestly, and I don't mean to sound braggy, if you had to decide who you wanted to play on Sunday, and your options were: The Mark Brunell led Saints, the Jim Sorgi led Colts, or the Tarvaris Jackson led Vikings, I'm pretty sure the Vikings would be last on your list*. (And, though this may be bold, I think that Colts, if not both the Colts and Saints, would be a game you'd actually WANT to see for your team Sunday/Monday. If someone said that instead of playing the Ravens, the Packers play the Colts, and Manning is out, you'd probably be happy about the switch.) *It would certainly make them more beatable, no doubt, but this was a playoff team without Brett, he's just gravy, and I don't think most teams are in that situation. |

Because I remembered now, here are some thoughts I've been meaning to mention here: 1) I didn't see Percy Harvin play much in college, but I've been surprised at two things with him. For one, he seems to have pretty good hands. The second thing kind of goes with that in that he's proven to be much tougher/more durable than I expected. I say it goes with it because he seems to make tough catches in dangerous positions and takes big hits and hangs onto the ball, whether in the air or running with it. I mean, I don't have specific examples, but every week I think I say something to Matt about how impressed I am with Harvin in these areas. I guess maybe I was expecting more of a flyweight Reggie Bush-type speed guy only, but he's the whole package. 2) Is there a team in the NFL with more talent than the Vikings? Prideful fan feelings aside, I'm halfway asking this question to really see what others think. Because I think so, but it's hard to get perspective on things being entrenched in Packer/Viking land. It'd certainly be tough to think of a team with more all-pro talent at so many positions spread throughout the team. |

I feel like I am more willing to crown the Vikings than even NutCan's Viking correspondants. They do seem to be pretty solid at every position. I don't know if any team as any more talented than the Vikings, but I'm not one to use superlatives, so I won't say that they are the most talented team. As far as Jeremy saying that the Vikings were a playoff team without Favre last year: sure that's a good point, but do you really want to be a playoff team? The Vikings and Saints are a long way ahead of any other team in the NFC, and not just from a record standpoint. They did lose to one of the few good teams they played so far this year; in other words, they surely haven't had the toughest scheduled in the world (The Vikings have only won 3 games against teams currently with a winning record, and two of those wins were against the same team). But, they are clearly one of the two BEST teams in the NFC, and one of the 3 best in the NFL. The Vikings have some talent, but they were ONLY a playoff team without Favre. The Saints might not be very good with Brees, and the Colts may not be very good without Manning. As much as Favre was intended to be "gravy", I do not think the Vikings can make it to the Super Bowl without him. To continue my sporadic rant, Jeremy mentioned that the Vikings were 6-5 at this point last year. Even though that was their bad stretch, they are indeed 4 wins better this year than they were last year. Brees is amazing, Manning is amazing, Favre is amazing. Any of these three right now could be could be awarded the MVP and you really couldn't be too upset about the others getting snubbed. I think Favre is more valuable to the Vikings success than some are willing to admit. |

Well, they only lost to the Steelers thanks to an awful call taking a td off the board, which then led to a defensive TD, and then later another defensive td. Favre makes them a special team, but they're a good team either way, and you can't say that about pretty much any other team losing their starting QB. |

Not that it's fair necessarily, but the Vikings really didn't do anything to help their cause for wanting more respect. I was going to take back a little of what I said about the Saints after they barely barely hung on to beat a bad team, but then the Vikings went and looked just horrible against the Cardinals. |

That's true, but you have to give credit to the Cardinals, who played really well in all phases of the game. They shut down the Vikings running attack and forced them into 3rd and longs. What hurts the Vikings now is injuries to some of the top tier players are coming at the worst time. The Saints didn't barely hang on, they were handed the win. Who misses a 20 yard field goal? |

jthompto Wrote - Today @ 05:33:59 PM The Saints didn't barely hang on, they were handed the win. Who misses a 20 yard field goal? This brings up an interesting point. Except that the Saints still had to go the length of the field to score a touchdown just to tie it. They weren't handed anything other than an opportunity. You don't go 12-0 without getting lucky here and there. Yes, the Redskins missed an unmissable field goal, but it's not like that field goal was with no time left and the redskins down by a point. They were still up by 7. So yes, the Saints caught a pretty significant break, but they still had a big challenge ahead of them which they capitalized on. Only if the holder had run the ball back 90 yards unto his own end zone and then just handed the ball to the closest Saint could you even remotely say that they were handed anything. Yes, the Cardinals actually did look pretty good. The Vikings don't seem to have many weanesses, but I do remember early on in the season when they had some offensive line issues. The cardinals seemed to exploit that, and Favre got hammered several times, including one sack that probably could have been flagged for RTP, but he got tossed like a rag doll. |

I think it's impressive that nan3123 is 1-14 so far this week, that seems to defy explanation. Let's hope they go 2-14! |

Someone needs to tell these refs that it's not PI just because the Packers have an incomplete pass.

This would be a completely different game if the Ravens were cappable of catching a pass. |

I think the ravens think there's 5 quarters in a football game. Way to piss one away, Flacco. |

Well, the refs were clearly shooting footage for a tutorial video for pass interference calls. Plus, the Ravens had a reputation coming into the game for pass interference, and you can't claim that the Packers haven't been "victims" of their own reputation for having physical DBs in the past (illegal contact penalties in the secondary). I did think that all nine were legit (both the ones on the Packers and the ones on the Ravens). But the thing is, those kinds of things happen on lots of plays and they probably didn't need to be called. Also, this was a matchup of two of the most penalized teams in the league, stands to reason that there are going to be a few penalties. |

In other news, other than a 30 second outburst, the Packers basically shutdown the Ravens all night. |

Interceptions. Both teams. All around!
