Giants 17 @ Packers 45 |
JeremyI know you want to be at home and all, but I don't know about the Packer fan's open, unwaivering, rooting for the surging Giants to get past a Dallas team that had been on the ropes for a month. The playoffs always have to be viewed as a "be careful what you wish for" situation.Honestly though, I'm at a loss for words regarding the likelihood the Packers might make the Superbowl. There are only three directions this game can go: 50 point blowout in favor of the Packers, Eli Manning throws 7 interceptions, is figuratively lynched in the media and literally lynched when he gets home to New York. Close game that is kept alive for the Packers by a ridiculous BFR call. Brett Favre has a meltdown of titanic proportions, throws 7 interceptions, and the worst anyone says about it is "Brett Favre may have just ended his storybook season. That's really too bad for a story to end this way for such a universally beloved figure."
SarahThis is just plain awesome. Two years ago I could not have predicted this. We have to beat the Giants so that Super Bowl 42 can be Good vs Evil. The Giants secondary is hurt and will be no match for Favre and our wide receivers. HEE hee, I'm sooo giddy, but I mustn't get ahead of myself. GO PACK GO!
MattThe Giants have Mannimentum! Giants 34 - Packers 17
JonI could see New York winning this, but I have a hard time picking them over Green Bay. Here's my take. The Packers are a well-rounded, above average team in a league full of ok teams with deficiencies. The Packers are no longer a pass only team, so it's hard to see how they won't at least contend with just about anyone. However, this will probably be their toughest game of the year, with the exception of the Dallas game. As an elite team, you aren't really tested more than 2-3 times per year in the NFL. I don't think this will be like week 2, scoreboard wise, but, the Giants will probably have to get to Favre often and be able to stop the run in order to change the outcome. Then again, maybe they'll just outscore them. |

My comments for the two games: Patriots: duh Packers: duh Clearly the Patriots cannot lose. Now, I don't think the Packers-Giants game is a no-brainer, but I still would have to say that on paper the Packers are the better team. These two teams met early on, and both teams are saying that they are different teams than they were at that time. That's true. Bother teams got better as the season went on, I just think the Packers get more better. I really hope there is a really really bad BFR call that puts the Packers over the Super Bowl, because I know that would really make Jeremy happy. And that's all I care about; Jeremy's happiness:) Edit: Law of averages: The Giants have won something like 9 straight road games. Seriously, that can't continue forever. The Cowboys have played horrible the last 4 games. Seriously, that can't continue forever. What Jeremy says is true. It's not like the Giants are the easy ticket to Arizona. But I'd much rather play at home, especially after seeing how the Packers crushed a very good defense that seemed to be held at bay partly because of the weather. |

Chargers @ Patriots I reallllllllly thought the Colts would win last week. I didn't see the game so I'm sure how that happened but it doesn't really matter. If the Chargers want to move on they'll have to suprise me again. Look at the home field, the coaches, the xp and maturity, etc. Giants @ Packers I for one was not really rooting for the Giants. At this point in time they're clearly playing better than Dallas, so I kind of wanted Dallas to win if anything, because then Favre could win there in his career, now it might (probably even) won't ever happen. Seattle was not a good defense, they just had a cake schedule. New York's defense has been very good in the second half of the year, though they have some injuries in the secondary. If the line and other blockers (I don't expect too much 5 WR sets) can give Favre time and the Pack gets an early lead they should win though. If they get behind by 14 again I'll be a lot more worried this time since the Giants can actually run the ball. To ensure victory, someneeds to figure out the word to break Eli's hypnosis that is making him think he is his brother. |

I'd like to point something out for the Packer fans on this site regarding Jeremy's analysis of the game. Jeremy mentioned 2 scenarios: one has Eli Manning throwing 7 ints and getting slaughtered by the media, the other has Favre throwing 7 ints and getting consoled by the media. Now, this can't really be taken as an insult of any kind except to the media. Now, I'm one that generally isn't going to slaughter someone no matter how bad they play. For the most part I think Favre has played well enough over the years where a 7 int performance can be looked at as "man, that's too bad." It wouldn't be his first bad playoff performance, but he's still in a way earned the right to have a bad performance be sort of "glossed over". Eli on the other hand hasn't really done anything to earn a pass with the media, so a bad performance on his part would be fuel for the "give him the boot" or "burn his house down" type media coverage that is so often given to high profile athlete's that don't live up to our mostly unrealistic expectations. Eli Manning was supposed to be the next great QB before he was even drafted. In fact, I think even he thought so because he felt the need to turn down the lowsy Chargers franchise in favor of the Giants. Because he hasn't performed like a hall of famer in his 3rd year, he is falling way short, and it seems like no performance can live up to what writers and fans want him to be. Favre on the other hand came out of nowhere, got good fairly quickly, was (pardon me) the best for about a 3 or 4 year stretch, and has since sort of coasted off that stretch. Favre never had expectations to meet. He played in Green Bay which is about as media-friendly of a place as you can get, compared to Mannings surroundings of New York. I'm not going to be a "Favre apologist" here, although I will say that for all the "bad games" or "bad plays" he's made over the course of his career, you could probably find about 5, 6 7, or 8 unbelievable plays or games that make up for that. Anyway, that's not my point. In summary, Jeremy wasn't criticizing Favre in anyway way (or were you, sometimes I can't tell). He was pointing to two similar scenarios involving two different people and fans and writers reacting in opposite ways. Personally, if Manning threw 7 interceptions, I don't think I would say the media slaughter was rightfully so. That's kind of just me. I don't complain when Favre gets heaps of praise, partly because I'm a Packer fan, but moreso because I'd rather compliment someone for doing good or assume they had a bad day if they did bad. If someone is truly horrible, sure, I'll say it, but 1 or 2 or a handful of bad games or bad plays doesn't merrit some of the vitriol that the media often lays down. (note: most of this doesn't apply when they are talking about Vikings players. Because, come on, who doesn't like hearing their rival team get the smack laid down on them?) |

Is Eau Claire getting FOX in HD now like Wausau? Somehow Charter managed to spin it so now they look like heros for giving us HD just in time for the Packers playoffs hoping we will forget about the NFL network debacle. No. Fox 25/48 is working on upgrading to a digital signal. The FCC is only demanding a move away from analog to digital, there's no where that says it has to be HDTV. Fox 25/48 is viewed as one station by fox national so Fox won't buy them the equipment for both. It's likely that we just wont get HDTV for a long long time on our fox just because we happen to live in an area covered by a station owned by people constantly on the brink of bankruptcy. |

Also, going into this season Favre was 12/20 in the playoffs with 1.7 TD's a game and 1.3 int's. Those aren't terrible numbers but they aren't beyond reproach. He'd had 14 int's in the playoffs this decade (6 games). Brett has had some epic bad games and plays in the playoffs. Obviously you could say he's offset good games with bad, but who couldn't you say that about? Someday in the not too distant future Peyton Manning will pass every one of Favre's records, yet up until last year the media was merciless with the "can't win the big one" type comments, and I read an article talking about how perhaps this year is "regular" Manning and LAST year was the fluke. Weird stat. The Packers only have 4 playoff victories when Favre throws an INT. He's thown an INT in every playoff loss. |

Im going with the Packers and Patriots, but knowing the Packers extremely good luck, the chargers will somehow beat the patriots and lose every talented player they have in the process. Also the University of Phoenix Stadium in Arizona will be crushed in a storm and the NFL will decide to move the super bowl to Green Bay! Keep in mind: the Giants have won 9 straight road games. (only road loss this season week 1 to Dallas) Ryan Grant is the key to victory for the packers, if the Giants stop Grant they have a chance. |

I think the Moss battery incident is somehow traced to a member of the Packers staff. Someone probably paid that woman to distract Moss. I didn't realize that the Arizona stadium was called the University of Phoenix Stadium. I was thinking to myself, They don't play in Sun Devil stadium anymore, they built a new one. Then I remembered that the University of Phoenix is the online university, so it's just another corporate stadium name, for the most part. Plus, I'm pretty sure the University of Phoenix does not have a football team for the Cardinals to share the stadium with. |

I'm getting Volek and Rivers mixed up. The chargers are still in a good position. Think of it this way. If the Patriots win, then the Packers would have to play the Patriots. If the Chargers win, then the Packers would have to play a team that was capable of beating the Patriots. I still think I'd rather play the Chargers. |

Here's my Giants-Packers game comment: The best part of the Giants' defense (their Defensive ends) will be basically neutralized by the best OT combination in the NFL. And the best aspect of the Packers offense (their receiving corps) will run circles around the banged up Giants secondary. Packers 38-Giants 17 |

It is a little comforting to know (if indeed the Packers can win today), that a seriously banged up Chargers team was only trailing 14-12 in the 4th qtr. If the Chargers had a healthy LT, they probably would have been up 21-14 at half-time. |

Al Harris got owned, stop wasting plays by giving the ball to Koren, New York somewhat quietly has one of the best offensive lines (they had at least 3 different starting RBs this year and they all did pretty good), Packers didn't throw enough short passes, in related news they were not patient on offensive and kept going for the big play, in more related news Grant was wide open underneath on the OT interception play, and lastly, EMR. |

The Packers had their opportunities. The ball was on the ground for the taking in a couple key situations and that first interception turned gain of 25 yards is something that can only happen to the Packers. The Giants were just more consistent, while the Packers scored off big/flukier plays. Consistency will wear down "flukes" most of the time, though the Giants did everything possible to give the game away. On the inexplicable-drive-bailing-out karma meter the EMR was offset by the Sam Madison foul. Plexico Burress played like a man possessed. |

I thought he kind of played like Plaxico Burress. Seriously though, he played amazingly well and the Giants pretty much whipped the Packers despite the closeness of the game, especially the Giant's O against the Packer's D. But that doesn't make the loss any easier to swallow. Eli Manning?!? If the Giants can hold the ball for 40 minutes and not have any turnovers they could win the Super Bowl. Not that I even care who wins. That's the problem with championship games. They're so anti-climatic for everyone except for the fans of the 2 teams that are playing (and sometimes them too if it was an accomplishment just to get that far). One other random note. I can't believe Terry picked the Giants. I blame him for the loss. |

I don't know if it was for any actual reason or not, but I told Sarah before the games I felt the Giants beating the Packers would be a bigger upset than the Pats losing. I don't know if it's just because it felt like the Packers could do no wrong, (a lot of breaks went their way tonight too) or what, it just seemed like no one was going to beat them. (Though, not necessarily because they had more talent than the other teams.) As a matter of fact, I was already decided I was picking them against the Patriots. Oh and I said it last week, and in my game comment for this week. Be careful what you wish for next time around. |

Scott Wrote - 01/17/2008 @ 05:55:42 PM If that forecast holds up, that could be one of Favre's 2 or 3 coldest games ever. It ended up being the 3rd coldest NFL game ever, behind the Ice Bowl and some Bengals game. So, I'm guessing it stands to reason that it ended up being Favre's coldest. (Though doesn't that seem weird? Is just below zero really THAT unusual for WI? Should we consider it symbolic that as the game ended the temp was minus 4?) All in all QB4 and Peyton's Brother really did inexplicably well in the weather. Peyton's brother had no turnovers, QB4 had two, but only one was a typical "What the hell are you doing, Brett?!?!" INT which in this-can-only-happen-for-the-packers fashion was stripped on the return and without even hitting the ground went right into the arms of the only Packer in the tri-state area actually netting the Packers yards and an automatic first down. |

Also, where does this game rank on the heart-stop-o-meter? There was that last Giants fumble that got batted around. 2 game winning field goal attempts, the afore mentioned INT/fumble the ball right back. Both teams kept having drives extended by iffy, you can't complain, but they also could just as easily have not called that, type plays. The ball was batted into the air, and then hung there for an eternity, before falling harmlessly to the ground 3-4 times. I mean, I'm not sure anything can beat that Steelers-Colts Jerome Bettis fumble where the earth got knocked a few inches out of orbit by everyone on the planet simultaneously jumping off their couch then screaming gibberish as the ball is being run back the other way until Big Ben saved the season. Still though there wasn't one single moment like that, this Packer-Giants game was pretty intense. Edit: Not to mention that Bettis play gets a big bump up the heart-stop-o-meter, since it actually did for one fan. |

I bet he would have been kicked out of town without being allowed to pack a suitcase if he had missed another one. That game couldn't have ended up any other way if he wanted to keep his life. I too will now quit football until September. I probably won't even watch the stooperbowl even for the commercials, as they're not funny anymore. Pats Giants? I call Pats, but don't give a damn. |

Matt always picks against the Packers. There was nothing smart about it, just the automatic seleciton for the team playing the Packers. |

Well, not that anyone cares, I am officially "over it" now. The Pack once again managed to throw away a gift. This seems to be the tale of the decade for Wisconsin professional sports fans. Alot of people blame Favre, the coaching, but, I personally blame just one person. Matt. As the final kick went through the goalpost, all I could think was "at least Matt is happy" as I quietly exited my buddies house. Forever shall you feel Packer scorn. It's nothing personal of course. I truly enjoy your commentary here at nutcan. It's kind of like your an idiot savant of all that sucks. |

I personally think this is going to hurt even more with time. We had an easy schedule, awe-inspiring game-winning plays, everything fell into place for the Packers to play in and win the Super Bowl. Favre's going to retire before we ever go to the Super Bowl again. It'll be 30 more years, I don't care what people say. Sigh. Even with the sucktastic play that unfolded with what became the NFC Championship game, we still had a chance. The Giants missed the !@#@!$%@#$^% field goal to win the game! We got the ball in overtime! My hopes were raised all over again and then dashed beyond recognition in a matter of 3 minutes. It was awful. I wish the players had to feel as bad as we did. Jerks. |

Jeremy Wrote - 01/16/2008 @ 10:11:06 PM No. Apparently by "long long time" I meant a couple weeks. Fox HD went up on Tuesday and though I've yet to see the words "Eau Claire charter has added Fox HD" all signs seem to be pointing that way. Supposedly the major carriers get their signals from the "Over the Air" networks by putting in a direct fiber line to them, and Charter could have done that for a long time now. Certainly at any point during the football season. |

Chargers 12 @ Patriots 21
Jeremy
There are two big reasons the Patriots have to worry about this game that stem from one key factor. The Packers are still in the playoffs. This means one of two things. 1) The all injured Chargers will find a way to sneak past them because all the best teams have to be eliminated before they get to the Packers. 2) The Patriots will win the game but lose Tom Brady and Randy Moss in the process...just because that's how life seems to work out for the Packers.Sarah
The Chargers lost a lot when they won against the Colts. I haven't had time to look at the status of people, but LT and Rivers both got hurt. They are also just banged up on general. Plus I think the Patriots are like 16-1 or something. Oh, they're undefeated? I did not know that. Well, maybe this game will be even harder for the Chargers based on that little bit o info.Matt
Randy Moss is clearly a locker room distraction for the Patriots. I think that they should trade him in the off-season. I hear the Chiefs are willing to give up Napoleon Harris.Jon
It's kind of sad, in a sports kind of way, that we didn't get an Indianapolis - New England rematch.
