Raiders 7 @ Packers 38 |
JeremyIf the Packers lose this game then all bets are off. The Vikings turned the ball over like 7 million times and still beat the Raiders. The Raiders are just an awful awful team.
SarahIt's been a long time since I've seen some Packer football. Favre's winning of the Sportsman of the Year got me thinking. Maybe he didn't have the best year out of everyone, but he did break a lot a records. MVP MVP MVP MVP
MattThe Raiders are on a roll. Oakland 27, Green Bay 21
JonPackers' losing streak continues? Probably not, but it wouldn't hurt. |
Vikings 27 @ 49ers 7 |
JeremyThe Vikings average margin of victory is 17.5 points. Their average margin of loss is 10.67. Factor out their best and worst games and it's 14.6 and 6 respectively. A few weeks ago the Giants and Lions looked like locks for the two wildcard spots. The Vikings outscored them by a combined 52 points. They held the Cowboys, who were at home, to fewer points than anyone all season. What am I trying to say here? Perhaps the 0-34 Packer game was the anomaly, and not the crushing of the Chargers, Lions, and Giants, who could all be playoff teams. Everything seems to be falling into place for the Vikes to make their annual run at being the best team to not make the playoffs, costing themselves about 12 spots in the draft in the process.
SarahThe Vikings are back in the playoff hunt.
MattRay Edwards is not here to talk about the past.
JonMinnesota is the hot team! So they'll probably lose. Still, they've sure become quite the high scoring team again. |
Colts 44 @ Ravens 20 |
JeremyOh those poor Ravens. Boy, did they get hosed.
SarahStupid Ravens. | |
MattP-Man for MVP!!!! | |
JonThe NFL has decided the Colts will win this, right? |
Saints 34 @ Falcons 14 |
JeremyI'm sure going into the season this game seemed like a good idea.
SarahI was sooo tempted to pick the Steelers.
MattPass | |
JonNo one wants to watch this. Actually, I'd maybe watch if I wasn't busy Monday night. |

Or she could have put the wrong comment in the box, but I think she was commenting on the game being so damned boring that she would be watching the Steelers? That is my bet. FYI I took the Packers to the Raiders in Madden 2k5. 98-0. I then took the Packers to the Bills, 118-6 (missed extra point). Favre had a combined 1500 passing yards in those games. |

Screw you guys, I have to go snow blower shopping tonight. Incidentally, is "Snow Blower" a regional thing, because everyone else (especially businesses) seems to call them "Snow Throwers." |

Who's everyone else? I always thought they were called snow blowers. "Snow Thrower" sounds more like the person in your snow ball fighting squad who has the best arm. Tell that to the next person that tries to sell you a "snow thrower". |

Well, from what I see, Jeremy did pick the Packers. My feeling with the Vikings right now is this: Which Vikings team with show up. Will it the team that got blown out by the Packers, or will it be the team that crushed the Giants and the Lions? I think we're more likely to see something closer to the former from here on out, which is why I really hope the Vikings don't make the playoffs. They are one of a few teams that I really would rather not have to face again. (that list probably includes the Giants as well). |

The Packers game was a catalyst for some defensive changes the players have been bugging the coaches to make all season, so far so good on those. I forget the details, I think the gist was that the "Stand in our zones and watch the other team play catch 'Cover 2'" had to go. They've looked like a different team since then, not to mention T-Jack is playing better too. |

Can someone tell me why if the playoffs started today the Cardinals would get in over the Vikings. The standings seem to say otherwise. Is it some lame 3-way-tie rule? |

Going by this, since its a 3-way tie and the Vikings and Lions are in the same division, divisional tie-breakers apply first between them and the "winner" then goes to the tiebreak w/the Cardinals. Since the Lions and Vikings split, it goes to best winning percentage in division games, which the Lions have the advantage in.

Whilst I don't doubt the validitity of your analysis, they've also played 2 home games against terrible and/or terrible on the road teams and also had Eli pretty much gift wrap and put a cherry on top of the other game. I'd just hate to see all the Vikings fans get their hopes up only to be dashed when they can't win on the road in Denver. Wait, forget I said anything, I'm sure the Vikings have been a juggernaut in disguise all year long. Actually I can see the Lions ending up 7-9 and the Vikings and Cardinals both going 8-8. Which might leave the door open for my mid-season pick of New Orleans to slide in at 8-8 as well. And I'm thinking the Saints will beat the Cardinals so they're out, and then the Saints will be 7-5 in conference and the Vikings will 6-6 so the Saints will get it. If I'm at all reading the tiebreaker logic correctly, which is a big if. |

Chris Collinsworth said on Inside the NFL that the Vikings are the team he would LEAST want to have to play in the playoffs, so take that for what it's worth along my line of questioning earlier. |

OMG! Jeremy, I've never claimed to be the world's most intelligent human being, but trying to make quick sense of the cluster-quote you left gives me a migraine! Also, Bryant Gumble is by far the worst sportscaster that ever lived. Who gave this guy the job? No wonder the cable companies won't carry this network. They want to spare us all from his idiocy his his seemingly lack of interest in the sport of football. |

Also, to complement my comments on the Vikings game I figured out the Packers Margin of Victory is 11.8 and Margin of loss is 8.5. Factoring out their best and worst you get 10.3 and 7 (the 7 is one remaining loss). So obviously it's meaningless, but the Vikings have won by more and lost by less, which doesn't seem like it could be right. |

With the smoking ban in MN, I was able to watch the Packers/Cowboys game without choking to death. It was more comfortable than last year's packers playoff game where I had to watch at DoubleDays in a haze of cigarette (and pot) smoke. |

Chris Collinsworth says the Vikings are the team he'd least want to face in the NFC playoffs. Tons of articles are being written about their sudden ascension. Espn is predicting the Vikings 44-13 this weekend. It sure doesn't take long for sport writers to fire up the bandwagon. It will be interesting to see how quickly it changes when they inevitably lay an egg in San Fran. |

ESPN agrees with Jeremy. I can't say I disagree though, to a certain extent. Again, it comes down to which Vikings team decides to show up. Because they have definitely been a very different team at different times in the season. |

Well first off I wouldn't say ESPN "agrees with Jeremy" because Jeremy has just been passing along what ESPN has been saying about them, for the most part. I do think your whole "depends with team shows up" thing is a bit unfair, because as I showed up above the 0-34 game was the anomaly, outside of that their largest loss is 10 to the Cowboys, which came off a blocked filed goal. That Packer game was played against the 3rd string QB and had Adrian Peterson getting assassinated a little after halftime a week after he ran for 250 yards in the second half. It's not as if the Vikings either win by 20 or lose by 20, they've been winning big and barely losing all season, outside of that one game. Edit: I've been saying all season they would be a force to be reckoned with if they could even count on below average Quarterbacking and Jackson has stepped it up as of recent. If Jackson keeps it up they could do a lot of damage. Teams that can stop the run, and run at will, always have the potential to shake things up in the playoffs. Edit 2: Please to note, I personally am not making a case for the Vikings making a Superbowl run. The scope of this conversation is merely based on the question, "Would you be scared to play the Vikings in the post season?" |

It all comes down to this Jackson is the right type of Quarterback for this system. The Vikings are 6-2 when he starts and 0-4 when he doesn't start. The 2 starts he lost were the ovetime loss against Detroit where he was hurt in OT and Bollinger came in and turned the ball over giving the Lions good field position for a field goal and against the Cowboys where a blocked field goal and an AP fumble were the difference in the game. He isn't a superstar yet, but he seems to be doing all the right things when he is healthy. I think what the writers are saying, is out of the lower tier NFC teams (everyone except Dallas and Green Bay) the Vikings are the most likely to pull of an upset. Tampa Bay, Seattle, Detroit, Arizona, Washington, New Orleans, don't really scare me that much if I am a Cowboys or Packers fan. I agree the Vikings will not win the superbowl, but they do have a chance to make the playoffs and possibly win one game. |

So that seemed to be more a case of almost winning despite Jackson's play, even if he was arguably the better of the bad quarterbacks that day. When we were in Orlando we went to Disney's Boardwalk. They were holding the College Football Awards that night. We got there when all the players were leaving the awards. I was five feet away from Howie Long, who must've been a presenter. We also were by lots of players, but since I don't follow college football, I had no idea who they were. A great example of this is the 2003 season, in which the Vikings finished 9-7, missing the playoffs and division title by one game. In that season they lost to the chargers, raiders, cardinals and giants. Those teams ending up having the fist 4 picks in the next years draft and all finished worse than 4-12. And we all remember the 4 year stretch or so, when the Vikings failed to win a game outdoors! |
