JeremyThe Bengals are one of those "cinderella" teams that just start off so hot everyones talking about them so much that everyone will be rooting against them by the end of the year. | |
MattRudi Johnson better start scoring some TDs. | |
JonI could see this going either way. I'll stick with the "it" team right now over the inconsistantly good Jacksonville. | |

SarahSan Diego is awesome-o, Pittsburgh can't even get their officials to keep accurate time. It's quite the toss-up. But let's go with the sunny weather people. |

This was my last post last week but I'll bring it over to here so people can see it. "About 3/4th of the way through the (badger) game something hit me I had to ponder. Why havent the page 3 faithful/well wishers ever gotten together for a Badger game? It makes too much sense to not happen, Madison is a Midway point between Alex, Bret, Scott, and the Staff and home to pretty much anyone else that has been here more than twice. Add to it that it's the only team in any sport at any level that we all root for in common and this needs to happen at some point." |

lol (in an insanely scary way) at joe johnson and jamal reynolds counting 5.5 mil on the packers cap. sherman's legacy grows. i can't blame stocco for this one. he and the rest of the offense did more than their fair share. the defense was just pathetic today. and so ends any title chances for this year. i'm suprised no one took arizona or dallas. |

Jon, your argument would only work if suck=packers. But as it is, it is simply "Packers suck". ESPN said at somepoint this week that the Vikings have a big advantage in the NFC North this week simply because they don't play. That's funny. |

Since the Vikings have a bye this week, I figure people will need some way to pass the time, so here is your Official Week 5 Trivia Question: In 1976 this man became the highest ranked U.S. Military officer in the history of the United States. Who is he? First one to get it right gets to be honorary MBL for a day. |

Your problem Sarah, is that you underestimate the power of Gerald Ford. "In 1976, by Act of Congress, Washington was posthumously appointed to the rank General of the Armies" and "By executive order of President Gerald Ford, it was also determined that George Washington would always remain senior and could never be outranked by any other officer of the U.S. military." |

I don't think that he is officially 6-stars. From what I've read, the ranks of General of the Armies (Washington, Pershing) and Admiral of the Navy (Dewey) are superior to 5-stars and equivalent to 6-stars, but its never been decided officially that they are 6-stars. If that makes any sense at all. |

I really hope you're not serious about the Brett Favre rule when the defensive linemen actually shoved the qb well after the ball was gone. It wasn't like he was trying to slow down but couldn't, or that he just ran into Favre. I think according to some people, you can't actually call roughing the passer against the green bay QB. I'm actually going to start calling roughing the passer against Favre the "Viking Rule", because it is a rule that Viking fans will call it the Brett Favre rule no matter what. But, now that the Packers have an equal number of wins as the Vikings I can start to give good reason why the Packers the better team. 52-3 versus 33-16 is a start. Why would they bring in Rodgers in the beginning of the 4th quarter and have him throw the ball once? |
Jeremy - 9563 Posts 10/09/2005 @ 03:44:33 PM |
||
---|---|---|
To be fair: A) No most QBs will NOT get that call for just being ran into after letting the ball go. Watch Daunte, McNabb or Leftwich if you want to see what doesn't get called if the refs don't feel they have to protect them. Was it unnessisary? Sure Could he have not done it? Probobly. But that isn't the question. More often then not on any long pass the announcer will add "and look at the hit (fill qb name in here) took" and it will be something much worse. B) The Vikings didn't get to play the 2nd string Saints. |

c) I posted that when the flag was thrown because I had a feeling it was coming. d) I'm sort of kidding on the square about the BF rule. e) I just posted it to get a rise. |

f) They may have the same number of wins but the Vikings and Packers "non common" oppenents are Vikings: Atlanta(Away) and Cincinnati(Away), Packers: Lions(Away) and Browns(Home), Carolina(Away). Not really a comparison there. A combined 5-1 vs 1-6 headed into the week taking away the victories over the packers or vikings. |

Aaron Kampman got called for roughing the passer twice last week. And, I never actually said this: "most QBs will NOT get that call for just being ran into after letting the ball go". I said that this would not merrit a call. What I said was that the defensive player SHOVED Favre unecessarily. If a player shoves, rather than simply runs into because of momentum, a QB, that is the definition of roughing the passer. It wasn't just "running into him". IF that was the case I would not have expected the call. But if someone wants to point out a different definition of roughing the passer, I would like to hear it. I figured all of your c,d,e points were the case. The Packers were up 28-3 at halftime against the 1st string Saints, but the Packers had their second string team on the field the whole game. (green out, davenport out in the 2nd half, walker out, makeshift offensive line, 3 wide recievers, Diggs out). Also, I think the common opponents is a better thing to compare because you can compare almost directly. It makes more sense to say "We played team X and did this, and you played team X and did that." Uncommon opponents do tell some of the story, but you can't say what the other team would do. When you look at what DID happen against teams that both teams played, to me that is the most accurate assessment of 2 teams that haven't played each other. And so far, between the 2 teams that the Vikes and Packers have played in common, it would be hard to argue who actually played the better game. Jon, your argument still makes no sense. |

What I'm saying is you only have 1 win despite having a WAY easier schedule so far, not sure how that can be disputed. The Vikings had the Saints (with Joe Horn) 24-6 at the half, then played the 1st string Saints from that point on. Bouman looked like the 2nd coming of the Sperg out there. |

cause it doesn't work. here is the premise The Packers suck Favre equals the Packers Conclusion Favre suck doesn't work on this premise. Assuming this to be true(Favre equals the Packers), you can't assume that "Packers = Favre", which is what you would need for it to work. However, I don't the think the premise is true, in which case it would be a contradiction and anything would be possible. |

I was fishing all day, listened to the Packer game but didn't really pay attention since it was a blowout. So now going through and looking at the box scores, I'm seeing some seriously messed up stuff. 3 Detroit RBs scored? Tampa kicked 4 FGs and lost 12-14? Thomas Jones ran for 137 yards, yet Benson was apparently in the game just long enough to fumble in a 10 point loss that Braylon Edwards didn't have a catch in? Daniel Graham had 119 receiving yards, Dillon ran for 106 yet Pass had the running TD, and they win on a last second FG by Vinateri? Like that would ever happen. Manning has 2 INTs and 1 TD against the same team that gave up 50 TDs to Josh McDonald's last week? I thought Dallas might win, but they out gained Philly 456 to 129? What the deal yo? |

With the Badgers' loss yesterday, there national title chances probably also went down the tube because there will likely be at least 2 unbeaten teams. If however there ended up only being one or none, consider these facts. The Badgers stayed in the top 25 even with that loss, so they're still respected. There are 3 2-1 teams in Big Ten play, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa. Then of course at 3-0 is Penn State. The Badgers have yet to play all 3 of those teams, so if they were to run the table from here on out... We should try to get a game sometime. Only 2 left this season though, if they do make a run 11/12 against Iowa could be crazy. And probably pricy since it'll be Alvarez's last home game. Does anyone have a hook up for tickets? I really thought Michigan would win this week. Minnesota usually collapses in the 2nd half (must be something in the water), but I guess that doesn't start for them till next week :) |

Streak Ended Mark Taucher, right tackle for the packers, was called for his first holding penalty of his 6 year career. And it wasn't even holding! It's possible the officials misidentified the culprit and named Tauscher instead of guard Will Whitticker, who appeared to be holding on the play. But nevertheless, Mark Taucher is forever tarnished. |

So I'm working at Chancellors front desk and I have a MIS 304 program due tomorrow morning at 8:00. I'm busy all night tonight, so what do I do? I go to the Library to check out a laptop. I ask them more than once if the laptop has all the "Departmental" folders and files in the Start Menu, and they assure me that yes, it does. Well, without checking for myself, I trust them, figuring they know what they're talking. Turns out they didn't, and I'm now sitting here at the Chancellors front desk with a laptop that is doing nothing for me because it doesn't have VB.Net2003 like I thought it did (it would have been in the Departmental folders that I was told were in the Start Menu). So, as it turns out, instead of being productive and studious, I now have no homework with me and I will not be able to start my program until 10:00 tonight. Ah the joys of putting things off to the last possible moment. |

Speaking of Hunt and the salary cap again reminded me of a conversation I had with my dad last weekend. He can't imagine why Sherman is still with the team or how he got a contract extension before this season started. Then it occurred to me. The Packers biggest problem right now is not that Sherman is the coach. It's that their salary cap situation is bad, they've (meaning Sherman the GM) has been pretty bad with giving too big and long of contracts to players that don't deserve them, so consequently they have an overly young team that isn't that talented. This situation was sealed for at least this year and probably 1 or 2 more by the time the Packers thought about ditching Sherman. I think it was a case of the Packers making Sherman deal with his own crappy roster. Why bring in a new coach and hand him this mess? Let Sherman suffer with it. If he somehow succeeds, that would be great. If not, fire him after his new contract is done and by that time hopefully the salary cap situation will be better and a new coach can help restock the roster. |

I do have a job and I still post on my lunch break. Angels got jobbed tonight. I know I pledged to root for the White Sox, but I was so happy that the Angels took down the Yankees that I'm finding it hard to root against them. My current predictions: Sox win the next 3; Cardinals win 1, then Houston wins first home game, then Cards win next 2. Sox take the series in six (win 2, lose 2, win 2). That sucks about your laptop Scott. I miss the good old days of programming all night the day before an assignment was due. At work they actually expect me to do stuff everyday :( |
Scott - Ma'am, can you make sure your computer is turned on? 10/13/2005 @ 12:48:08 AM |

I finally finished the program. I am still rooting for the Sox, but really, the Sox have either when 3 straight or win at least one game by like 10 runs or more for me not to feel like the Angels took one. If the Sox win it in 7 games, people will talk. If they win it in 5, it will probably go away. |

upon further review, I think the replay was actually inconclusive. It look like the ball changed direction before it stopped in his glove, but it is hard to say whether or not it was the ground that caused the change. I'll back the umps now. |

Supposedly it can hit the groud as long as it's fielded cleanly afterwards. |

Does it really matter? I always thought that when you see the umpire make a big fist in the air that the batter is out. The really fun part is that I was wathcing the game in a bar when this happened so there was no sound. So there was about 25 people crowded around this little TV trying to figure out what the hell actually happened. |

To me, it was fairly clear from the replay that the ball landed in the webbing of the glove then bounced up into the pocket a little bit. I think the ump is claiming that the fist was for strike 3 but he never actually called him out. I saw it at home but after just finishing watching Lost and Invasion nothing could really suprise me or confuse me any more than I already was. |
Scott - You're going to have to call your hardware guy. It's not a software issue. 10/13/2005 @ 05:23:21 PM |

the actual motion by the umpire isn't really the issue, because he makes the same motion for a cleanly fielded strike 3 or a swing and a miss strike 3 that goes to the backstop. It's the words "you're out" that really matter, especially in a situation where the catcher may have not have caught the ball. And even if the catcher did indeed catch it (which he probably did), if he didn't hear those words, he should have either tagged AJ right away, which wouldn't have been that hard, or not rolled the ball to the mound. Jeremy, what do you mean by your comment? What's the over under on when how many games until Mike Tice is fired. And how much if at alldoes this sex scandal story hurt the Vikings' chances of getting a new stadium? |

A coworker (Josh - Malcreado on the message board) said that the rules state the ball can hit the ground on stike 3 as long at it is fielded cleanly afterwards. I guess as in not dropped/kicked around. I dont think Tice will be fired this year. It sends the message that the year is done, they have no real in house options, and statistically interim coaches do poorly. I think the cruise thing might hurt the chances a bit, but the chances are already slim. If a stadium gets done anytime soon it's because Ziggy put up a HUGE portion of it, in which case he could go that no matter how many orgies are going on. Early reports seem to be that the story originally reported is quite overblown, but obviuosly the story can't be entirly made up either. I guess we'll have to wait and see. |

"A batter is out when_ (a) His fair or foul fly ball (other than a foul tip) is legally caught by a fielder; (b) A third strike is legally caught by the catcher; "Legally caught" means in the catcher's glove before the ball touches the ground..." That's out of the MLB rulebook. If the ball hits the ground, it is not legally caught, and the batter is not out yet. Just clarifying. |

I agree that the catcher really "dropped the ball" when he didn't tag AJ. It should be instinctive for a catcher to do that. |

on a side note, it's interesting how not bored I was reading through the MLB rule book. |

Generally speaking isn't it matter of course to tag the batter pretty much no matter what? I see catchers do it all the time when they don't have to. |

when it's close, I think you are right. Apparently Paul didn't think it was close. On talk radio last night, the guy was saying that AJ tricked the umpire by running. That's crazy |

I don't know about that. I mean if AJ justs heads for the dugout and the Angels all go running off the field, what was the ump going to do? If he really had made up his mind about the call I guess he would call AJ out for being out of the basepath? Paul shouldn't have to think about whether it was close or not. The ball was within an inch of the ground, just stand up and tag the guy who didn't even run right away and this whole situation would be moot. I'm sure that's what the ump is thinking right now. |

Saints 3 @ Packers 52
Jeremy
Green Bay moves into a tie for first with everyone else, and the sky stops falling.Matt
The Vikings beat the Saints, the Saints will beat the Packers, therefore, by the transitive property the Vikings will beat the Packers this year. Q.E.D.Jon
I'm going with Green Bay on this one. Their turnaround probably starts this week.Sarah
Green Bay is for real, better believe. No, no, that's not the case. But if MN, who's been blown away in all their games, can beat NO, then we, who have lost our last 3 games by a combined pt total of 6 can beat NO. That's how these things work. Or that's how they better work damnit.
