It was nice to see them get back on track last week. I wont be surprised either way on this one. Party at our house.

I may not have been paying enough attention, and it may yet come up big, but I'm suprised I haven't heard a bunch of references to 1998 yet.

Michael Vick is almost like Doug Flutie. Obviously there are big differences, but at the same time, both of them have critics that say they don't do this well and can't do that well, but they seem to win games regardless.

I hope Ron Mexico runs all over Minnesota. I mean, we need to keep our records close. A famous writer was emailing Bill Simmons this week and he said he was a fan of the Packers and his favorite packer game was the Vikings Falcons 98 NFC Championship game. I have to say that it ranks right up there. I didn't watch it, I was skiing, but I paid attention to the score. It was a glorious moment when we called our friend's mom and found out the score. I digress. Go Falcons!

My guess is that halfway through, ESPN just cuts to a rerun of TILT. You know, the one where the Matador lures young players into the ring only to cut them down.

Speaking of Mexico...

Packers 29 @ Panthers 32

The Packers suck worse than Doug Mientkiewicz. The really sad part is that the beginning was the "easy" part of the schedule. They have quite the murderers row coming up. 0-4 is quite within reach. QB4 gets the start on the Vitals despite the fact that Jake Plummer had a decent week last week. It better not bite me in the ass.
matt.jpg
Matt
What's the cutoff for number of INTs Favre can throw this game before Madden and Michaels stop their inevitable Favre lovefest? 3? 4? Is their any number?
jon.jpg
Jon
What to make of a team that loses to the Saints, beats the Patriots and then loses to Miami?
Carolina by 80.
sarah.jpg
Sarah
Why must I torture myself??? Ok here's the thing. Cris Collinsworth and I'm sure others as well are saying that if the Packers are like 2-12, that they should bench Favre and see what Rodgers can do. That is not an option. You don't do that to Favre, maybe to other QBs, but certainly not to any QB named Favre. That's disgraceful and you will lose a lot of fans, including this one. That's not how a qb of his caliber goes out. Yea yea that's how Joe Montana went out. Blah Blah Blah. Joe Montana was hurt. Favre is fine, our team is not. Anyway, this is not going to be like last year's MN game against Carolina. I hope it is, but I don't think it will be.

I can't remember what year it was, or what team they were playing, but didn't the Falcons go to the Super Bowl one year, beating a team that had some sort of record offensive year, and a kicker who didn't miss a single field goal until the NFC championship game? Someone help me out with this. For once in my life, I'm confused.

not to change subjects, but Ned Yost should be a candidate for Manager of the year. The Brewers finished with 81 wins this season, marking a 14 game turnaround from the previous year. That is the biggest turnaround in the big leauges this year. I smell progress.

Ok, back to football, and the absolutely pathetic NFC North.

I disagree. 14 game turnaround, not that impressive. And with how long they stuck within making a run at the wild card, they should've been able to put together some sort of streak but they never did. I'm not saying he did a bad job, but I don't think he did that great. Now Maddux for pitching coach of the year, I'd be all for that.

Wow, didn't think the wild card races would be this close. Disappointing end for Clev after making a run, looks like Rollins and Philly might fall short too unless the Cubs score a couple quick runs.

According to the site I looked at, the line was 49rs +3, so they were indeed underdogs in that sense if none other. I don't know what you're going by unless it's records, which is lame.

Time to choose teams to root for in the playoffs. I'll take the ChiSox over the Braves. I can't stand the Yankees, and I actually hate the Red Sox more for becoming the Yankees evil twin, and the Angels have a stupid rally monkey. I despise the Astros, because I mean what the hell is an Astro and orange is a dumb color for uniforms (I can't stand Tennessee either consequently), the Padres don't even deserve to be in the playoffs, and I can't root for the Cardinals because Joe Buck is a jerk. So I'll take Chicago as I still favor the AL Central from the Brewers' days there, plus I like to see them do good because it causes Cubs fans pain. And back in the day when the Braves not only made the playoffs every year but the World Series I rooted for them quite a few times and it still seems like a shame that they only won once. Plus Cox should be manager of the year.

Who knew the NFC East would be this good?

Theoretically we could all have different update times, but the latest should suffice.

I have thought of making a lot of little cool changes like the one you mentioned, but it's kind of dishartening when page 3 goes 3 days without a post and gets like 3 hits a day. 3.

Maybe if the activity picks up ill feel up to it.

Maybe if there were more than 1 article written per year and some attention paid to any other sport besides the NFL, you could attract more people. Other than your 'detailed' comments on the picks each week, I'm pretty sure Scott and I have combined for more content then the whole of the Page3 'writers' over the last few months.

I don't know if this is proper etiquette or not, so ignore it if you wish. I suggest that the current trade between Homer and Millers be voted down until the extent of Caddy's injury is known. Cause if he's not healthy, this is a very one sided trade, and I still need to catch up to Homer.

And trade it for 2 late first round picks. They need major overhaul on this roster not just one or two pieces. Which is why I don't get why everyone had such a big cow about drafting a QB instead of defensive player this year. Honestly, would even the best defensive player in the entire draft made a difference so far this year? I highly doubt it.

It's not that they saved money, they just have no salary cap room cause they keep over paying for crappy players.

The NFL should put in a new rule that instead of punting, teams automatically chose a punt of 40 yards, plus a 10 yard block in the back penalty, and save everyone the trouble of actually running the play.

Play calling = what the ####! Favre on the last play = what the ####!

Will 7-9 win the division?

Not to pick on Bret since alot of people have said it. Brett Favre is NOT the Green Bay Packers. The amount of people who have argued that the Packers should sell out any future "to give Favre" a 1/2329042304 shot at doing anything this year is staggering.

I tell you what, I'm gonna try some of that toast. I agree with the play calling. instead of running the ball on first down for 1 yard and then running the ball on second down for another yard setting up a 3rd and 8, try passing the ball. Favre may not be a great QB anymore, but he's still as good enough to through the ball.

LOl! The Packers Suck.

Actually if I were to "Power Rank" the division I think despite being in last I'd have the Packers on top. They just keep losing, but they don't look completely inept in the process.

i'd rather lose by 50 than lose by a dropped catch with one minute to go after trailing by 19 and coming back to within a fg only to have all hopes dashed.

the packers have lost their last 3 games by a grand total of 6 points. They really aren't playing that badly. It's still a good thing they are in the NFC North. 4 TD, 280+ yards for Favre. I hope Sherman takes a hint from the second half: "PUT THE BALL IN FAVRE'S HANDS!!!" Stop running the ball.

It's not like they really lost on the dropped catch. They lost because they gave 32 points. It is annoying to blow a decent chance at the end of the game, but getting destroyed by 50 wouldn't be any fun.

Umm....no. They still need to get the running game going. But if they are going to pass, run more mid-range routes instead of either a 2 yard pass or a 40 yard bomb.

I wouldn't call it a dropped pass. well defended, rushed throw, rushed play, but he didn't drop it. I'd rather lose this way than by 50 as well.

well I didn't mean stop running all together, but by the second and third quarter if you only get 1 yard on first down, running on second down is only setting you up for a 3rd and long and only one chance to make a throw. I just think they can let Favre take more control than they are giving him.

You're both right.

Alex in the sense that if they want to succeed then they need to get a running game going. Scott in the sense that they CANT run the ball and should let Brett try to do something instead of forcing something that isn't there.

don't look now, but Brett Favre is 2nd in the league in TD passes, and on pace for 36 tds and more than 4000 yards again. Usually that leads to a successful team. Just wait, I feel a rediculous run coming up.

The consensus bandwagon pick to win the World Series Astros got off to a good start with a win today. I predict that Smoltz beats Clemens next game though.

The NBA is close to proposing a player dress code for all team functions. Business causal is the minimum, jeans not allowed. Comments, opinions? I think it's a bit much since it includes team flights, traveling to and from games, and all public appearances. Some of the owners must also own business casual clothing stores or something.

Did anyone watch the Jets game last week? Was Bollinger that bad that Vinny deserves to start this week? I didn't see it so I'm not sure, but I doubt it.

Is anyone else annoyed that hockey is back? It will undoubtedly bump some other sports off of ESPN that I might actually want to watch.

I didn't see the Jets game, but I don't think it has anything to do with that game. It's Bollinger versus Testaverde. I don't think there's a question concerning who can help you win more. Ron Jaworski knows everything about football and he called him Bruce Bollinger. That's telling.

Yahoo always adjusts them after the "official" stats go in the books. With our partial points it does throw everyones off, it used to make a difference only if the yard gave you, or lost you, a whole point. I'm going to bed now, someone else fix the scores.

"Before we get to the Week 5 picks, here's my impression of Mike Patrick, Joe Theismann and Paul Maguire announcing my Wednesday night book signing in Chicago, which was scheduled weeks in advance and (incredibly) managed to somehow coincide with Game 2 of the White Sox-Red Sox series, an alarming turn of events on about 1,000 different levels. All right, here we go:

Patrick: "Fifth inning, Red Sox leading by two, man on first for Chicago, one out ... WHAT A PERFORMANCE by Bill Simmons at the ESPN Zone right now! Just an INCREDIBLE job handling this line of readers while watching the game! Guys, you CANNOT say enough about him!"

Theismann: "Mike, we talked to Jessica Dickerman last night, one of the coordinators for Bill's book tour, and she told us that she has NEVER seen Bill this focused. I mean, HERE'S A GUY who's coming into his own for the Worldwide Leader right now!"

Maguire: "And I want you guys to look at something, look at Simmons's right hand! Look at that thing! He's signed like 2,500 books this week, that hand is still going strong! It's like a claw! Let's get a close-up of that hand. LOOK AT THAT THING! I'm tellin' you guys, it's a claw! Watch him sign this book, watch this -- BAM!!!! You see that? Did you see how fast he signed that book? Look at that claw go!"

Patrick: "Here's a double-play ball to second, should end the inning ... and it GETS THROUGH Graffanino! Oh, MAN! He missed it! Now the go-ahead run comes to the plate for Chicago! Shades of Bill Buckner! WHAT A TURN OF EVENTS! And look at Bill Simmons. HE ... HAS ... TURNED ... PURPLE!!! What a moment for him right now! And everyone at the ESPN Zone is staring at Bill Simmons in DISBELIEF!"

Theismann: "Mike, we talked to Ellie Seifert last night, the head of PR for this tour, and she told us that this was her biggest fear: How Simmons would handle a Red Sox collapse during tonight's signing. I mean, HERE'S A GUY who bleeds for the Red Sox, and you can just tell, he can't believe this is happening right now. He can't believe it!"

Maguire: "Guys, I want you to watch something, watch this replay, watch Simmons's reaction to that error, watch this, here it comes ... he's watching, he's watching, he's watching, he's watching, he's watching, he's watching, he's watching ... WHAM!!! RIGHT THERE!!!"

Patrick: "What a replay! Great job in the booth, guys!"

Maguire: You want to talk about a guy who doesn't want to be signing books right now? You want to talk about a guy who's the color of an eggplant? I'm telling you, guys, he is DYING right now! He is absolutely DYING!"

Patrick: "And WHAT A JOB by Simmons just hanging in there, guys. Just a GREAT, GREAT job by Bill Simmons right now!""

Bill Simmons is an idiot. Did you read his picks after that part? (although i do agree he captured them perfectly) He suggested that Favre be traded to the Bears!!!! I mean I konw the Packers suck, but Favre=the Packers. Trade the rest of the team! He makes no sense. I agree with the other article, I think they are sabotaging him. I mean, what gives?

I thought it would be cool to develop (and maybe later improve) an algorithm to play against us.

It almost beat us last year.

That article on the Packers is patently absurd, and it isn't the first time I've heard or read something about it. Why would the Packers beg Favre to come back only to systematically conspire to get him to retire. The problem, if any, is that they sold out all to often to TRY and get ol' QB4 a run and now they are paying the price for it. If Favre wanted to make a run he could take a pay cut. The situation is what it is and both sides knew coming into it what to expect.

As far as Rodgers is concerned. He was potentially the #1 pick. He slid to 24th, that's hard to pass up. I challenge someone to point to a player on the board at #24 that would be the difference maker in the long run. One could argue they look long term and trade down for more bodies, but it's hard to argue with what they did, unless to you Brett Favre is more important than the franchise he dons on his helmet. Sadly it seems this is the situation with most packer fans.

What's there to root for without Favre? He's kept us in the games and he's been with us for so long, helping us get back into greatness. Why would we make him retire as a Bear? That would be ridiculous. He has taken pay cuts in the past. He doesn't even make that much money. Where is all of our money going to?

Simmons may be an idiot, but he's still hilarious. Also, I think Favre does have a healthy salary. Certainly not outrageous and probably not even undeserved, but large non-the-less. All the Packers money is paying for guys like Hunt, Ferguson is way overpaid, Franks just got his new contract, it's just being sucked up by a bunch of sucky dudes. Green is probably pretty well payed. KGB is probably overpaid. Basically no one is outplaying their contract and most of them are probably under performing.

Still, if they can just win a few games...

White Sox sweep!!! Bring on the Angels.

You couldn't have prayed for the end of the game to play out any better and then INT on the first play!?

About 3/4th of the way through the game something hit me I had to ponder. Why havent the page 3 faithful/well wishers ever gotten together for a Badger game? It makes too much sense to not happen, Madison is a Midway point between Alex, Bret, Scott, and the Staff and home to pretty much anyone else that has been here more than twice. Add to it that it's the only team in any sport at any level that we all root for in common and this needs to happen at some point.
