Buccaneers 24 @ Vikings 13 |
JeremySuper Bowl or Bust....then again who doesn't that describe. I say it every year, but seriously if the Vikings defense doesn't come together this year it is just impossible to play defense in a Viking uniform.
MattSecond comment of the season and I'm already tapped out ...Vikings 34 - Bucs 14
JonDidn't we kick these guys out of our division a couple years ago? Do we still play them every year anyway? I don't really care.
SarahI will admit that I'm worried about this year. How many years in a row can the Vikings screw it up? They have plenty of salary cap space, so they have been able to sign a lot of big names. I hope one big name falls on his face. Or tries to return punts and fumbles the ball. Or any number of things. ;) I don't know what Tampa Bay's been doing or who their starting QB is, (Simms?) so I am thinking this will be a blow out game. If it's not, the Vikings might be left scratching their heads. |
Bears 7 @ Commanders 9 |
JeremyThis game falls outside the rhelm of our normal comments, but I have something to say here. Can we all stop talking about the Bears losing Grossman as if it's the same as Culpepper, Favre, or Manning going down? He never really even got a shot to show what he could do, he's started like in like -3 games, he was hardly the franchise player, and there's a good shot that someone could walk in and make people forget he even exists. There really wasn't anything that separated him from the rest of the nobody quarterbacks there. Let's never speak of it again.
MattIf he gave it a little more time, I think Spurrier could have made it in the NFL ...Potatoes 17 - Bears 10
JonTo some people, life is an open road. The bears are ok.
SarahJebus, I can't keep making witty comments. Go JT O'Sullivan! |
Packers 3 @ Lions 17 |
JeremyEveryone has Detriot as their sleeper team. I'm no different in that regard. The only road bumps are that a) They looked pathetic in the preseason and b) It's Harrington or bust.Luckily for the Lions the Packers have looked even more pathetic in the preseason. The 21 points they scored on the Titans more than doubled their league worst 20 points from the first 3 games. They racked up about 200 turnovers and enough penalty yards to make it to the moon and back. All that said I wont be surprised to see them giving the Vikings a run in the end. Of course I won't be surprised if they go 3-13 either.
MattIt feels kind of weird picking Detroit over Green Bay and actually having a reason to other than my dislike of the Packers ...Lions 54 - Packers 3
JonI could see this one going to Detroit or Green Bay. I think both teams are bad, but Green Bay won't start their imporobable streak to the division title till about week 7.
SarahOh my beloved team. The main thing is to not get discouraged. I mean, they've come back from 1-4 and won the division. I don't know if I've gone into a season this concerned. I want them to win it all, but I think they have to figure out how to do that, and soon! Favre's been looking a little decrypted. I'll have to root for one of my new favorite players: Nick Barnett. :) William Henderson is still near and dear to my heart though, shake that ass! :) |
Colts 24 @ Ravens 7 |
JeremyPeyton Manning will throw for only 30 touchdowns this year. Daunte will prove who the MVP is. Mark it down.
MattWho cares ...Colts 72 - Ravens 59
JonThis is a good matchup. I just like Indianapolis too much to pick against them in week one. Tony Dungee is an excellent coach. As far as I know.
SarahMaybe this year Manning can prove he's a good playa and get his team to the Super Bowl. So, with Rice retiring, ESPN had a top 10 list of the best NFL players. Favre didn't even receive honorable mention. You know who did receive honorable mention? Ray Lewis. I don't think so. "I hate ya'll!" (which is now my saying for everything, if you don't know what i'm talking about, reference Peerless Price) |
Eagles 10 @ Falcons 14 |
JeremyDurp de durp de durpity Owens durp deeeeerp derp Owens. It was a long offseason. Ron Mexico throws for a prolific 63 yards, 1 touchdown, 2 ints, and 3 new infections. His 45 yards rushing gets him early entrance into the Hall of Fame. Seriously though how wierd is it that the NFL banned putting the word Mexico on the back of a personalized jersey?
MattI don't like either of these teams ...Atlanta 12 - Philadelphia 11
JonIf Philly isn't careful they'll get stuck in Atlanta. Gas is like a million dollars there.
SarahWow, how many games are there? I think Ron Mexico is going to pull one out over the Eagles. I think the offseason scuffles that have been going on have been a dandelion in the Eagle's cement. It may not seem like a lot, but it's cracking them up. Muhaha! |

Bill Simmons Excepts That pertain to us: "And while we're on the subject, how is it possible that the quarterback position is the most glamorous position in any sport, going back even to high school, where the quarterback always had his choice of the best-looking girl in school. So you would think all the best athletes would want to play this position, and this country pumps out dozens of good prospects every year ... and yet the NFL is so desperate to find decent quarterbacks, Miami actually had a battle for its starting job between Gus Frerotte and A.J. Feeley this summer? Frerotte and Feeley? Why not invite Spurgeon Wynn and make it a full-fledged crapfest? How is it possible that we can't find 30 good quarterbacks and 30 good punters in the entire world? I spend my nights wondering about this" The Blueboy Award for "Most disarming, unpreventable odor" Everyone has one friend who quietly locks the windows in the car when he's driving, then passes gas, waits for everyone to say, "Omigod, who did that?" ... only they can't roll down the windows. They eventually freak out from the stench as the driver laughs hysterically. My friend who does this is the Blueboy -- he even quietly turns on the heat when you're not looking to bring the smell to another level. And I guess my point is this: If you're a Packers fan right now, after they brought Mike Sherman back, after that ridiculous draft, after the lifeless preseason, after the way Favre looked ... I mean, can't you see them trying to roll down the windows, screaming in horror and doing anything to get away from that stench right now? That's a 4-12 season waiting to happen. I'll even predict it. The Dr. Gregory House Award for "Legitimate sleeper that absolutely nobody saw coming" Because that's the thing about sleepers: Nobody should be able to predict them. Last year, the Chargers came out of nowhere. The year before, Carolina. In 2001, New England and Chicago. When you hear people throwing the word "sleeper" around for teams like Arizona and Cincy, those are NOT real sleepers. You need to choose someone from this putrid group: Redskins, Giants, Bears, Bucs, Niners, Raiders, Titans, Browns, Bills and Dolphins. I'm telling you, one of those nine teams will make the 2005 playoffs, and everyone is going to say, "Oh my God, how did that happen????" So here's my pick: The Chicago Bears. Easiest schedule in the league. Inferior division and conference. Underrated running game. One All-Pro receiver in Muhsin Muhammad. A defense that has a chance to crack the top-five, helmed by some playmakers (Briggs, Urlacher, Harris, Tillman) and what could turn out to be the best secondary in the league (now that Mike Brown is back). A sizable home-field advantage, especially in November and December. Very good coach (Lovie Smith) who had them playing hard in October and November until their quarterbacks did them in. And best of all, NOBODY is talking about them. In fact, Sports Illustrated ranked them 32 out of 32. What's the big problem here? The quarterback. They're playing a fourth-round rookie (Kyle Orton) who's loved by the coaches and players ... but he's still a fourth-round rookie. So here's my question: Even if he's hit-or-miss, it's not like he's going to be much worse than Kyle Boller, Bledsoe, J.P. Losman, Patrick Ramsey or half the crappy starters in the league. Anyway, that's my 2005 sleeper -- I think they're going 10-6 and losing by 30 points in the first round of the playoffs. You heard it here. (And if they finish 4-12, you didn't hear it here.) Returning playoff teams: New England, San Diego, Indy, Philly, Minnesota, Atlanta (wild card). New playoff teams: Jacksonville, Kansas City, Baltimore, Chicago, Arizona, Carolina. Dropping out: Pittsburgh, Jets, Denver, Green Bay, St. Louis, Seattle. NFC NORTH Minnesota: 10-6 Chicago: 10-6 Detroit: 5-11 Green Bay: 4-12 SPORTS GUY'S PLAYOFF PREDICTIONS Round One: KC over SD, Jax over Balt, 'Zona over Atlanta, Minnesota over Chicago Round Two: Indy over KC, NE over Jax, Carolina over Zona, Minnesota over Philly Title Games: NE over Indy, Carolina over Minnesota Super Bowl Pick: New England 37, Carolina 34. |

Agreed. It was the NFL equivalent of Kevin Garnett swatting the ball away when a guy chucks it up after the refs stop play. It wouldn't have mattered if the guy caught it, but it doesn't matter if you get penalized either, so you may as well not give him the psychological benefit of picking it off. |

Watching all of the pregame shows has really been touching and very emotional. With Hurricane Katrina and the 4th anniversary of 9/11, I am just amazed at what people can do when tragedy strikes. I don't want to get all mushy, but it's very powerful stuff. Just a few notes on the other pregame items: ESPN thinks the Packers are trying to force Favre into retirement, by getting rid of wahle and rivera, drafting rodgers and trying to get favre to train him. maybe it is the end of an era. :( i can't believe that the packers organization are going into rebuilding mode, when are best guy for the job still has a few good years in him. Darren Sharper is a jerk, plain and simple. "For those who didn't think I'd look good in purple, look at me now" or whatever the hell he said. Yea ok, I'll watch as you get burned and I'll laugh. I will point out that Wiggins got hosed on an Off. Pass Interference call that cost a TD and would have changed the way the game played out. Also, trading Randy Moss was the stupidest move since the Herschel Walker deal. P.S. Fire Mike Tice, Ron Gardenhire, and Scott Ulger. |

Ok, there's still time left, but the Lions are not that good. The Packers had 15 penalties or so for 100 yards, a botched Field Goal, a fumble, an int, etc and the Lions still only scored 17 pts. And it took then quite some time before they were able to score those extra 10 pts and those were from the fumbles and stuff. Our defense actually did pretty well. So either our defense is not so bad or the Lions really suck. |

I am not at all convinced the Lions committed 12 fewer penalties than the Packers. I'm not saying that the refs were totally making stuff up against the Packers, but there were some pretty ticky-tack calls against the Packer secondary that were not going the same way for the Lions. Carrol actually got called for hands to the face after hitting a receiver in the numbers. So to sum up: there will be no talk at all this year that the Packers get preferential treatment from the refs. But at least the vikings lost. On a side note: the Packers ended the longest current streak (77 regular season games) of scoring at least 1 offensive touchdown in a game. Favre and Culpepper are on pace to combine for 0 TDs, 46 INTs, and 32 lost fumbles. I doubt that will happen, but it's funny to think about. |

What if Javon actually has a career ending injury? Wouldn't that be weird? I mean after he almost held out. I don't want that to happen, it's just a little odd after we talked about it not too long ago. And along those lines, isn't drew rosenhaus completely ruining his career? He had two high profile receiver clients that threatened to hold out and then they both turned out to be just empty threats. Doesn't he now become the parent who always threatens to discipline his kids but never does so the kids do whatever they want? Or maybe, in a mastermind move, he orchestrated Walker's injury to lure clients in to the idea of holding out to avoid an injury that would leave them without the millions they would get down the line. Is he a genious? Pennington was one fumble short of the record and I was actually surprised to see that it wasn't Daunte who had it. He actually wasn't even on the list they put up. |

Week 2 Predictions: Packers vs Browns - Driver is triple-teamed and Favre completes only one pass over 8 yards (which is still a screen pass). Packers defense terrified by Trent Dilfer. Browns win and Favre is shown on sidelines with very sour look on his face at least 12 times. Vikings vs. Bengals - Culpepper, once again unable to score 14 points on jump balls to Moss on free plays from offsides penalties, will still have very small hands. Vikings defense terrified of Carson Palmer. Bengals win and Culpepper also has very sour look on face on sidelines. Jermaine Wiggins has 8 TD's called back in referee conspiracy to get Jim Kleinsasser more touches. Lions destroy Bears 56-3 and take a 2-game lead on the division. Joey Harrington is still very pretty looking on sidelines. GO LIONS!!!!!!!!!! |

Fortunately for me, I predicted Tennessee would beat Pittsburg, not Pittsburgh. NFC North - worst division in football The Packers really suck. They only have 4 wrs on the team, 2 of which really suck, and 1 that might be done for the season. I thought the o-line was decent, but overall the offense sucked. 15 penalties sucks. The defense was fairly sucky. Carrol's penalty reputation from last year has apparently carried over. I'd say over the course of all the games yesterday, there were probably a good 30 hands to the face similar to some of the rather weak ones called on him in other games that didn't get called. Joey Harrington also still sucks. Badly. Daunte Culpepper is still overrated. Randy Moss is still good. And the Bears still suck too. I should have started McCardell. |

1) I'm not worried about Daunte and all the things I was worried about going into the year played out fine. The defense was awesome, especially factoring in the fact that they played 98% of the game. Edinger and the new punter looked good. Special teams as a whole looked good. The offensive line is a big problem, but they should get their act together soon. I'll take an opening day wake up call over a 7 game skid any day. 2) I'm not sure a Packer fan is in any position to call another teams quarterback overrated. |

Interesting tidbit, the packers reportedly made an offer on Koren Robinson monday. (Robinson was technically not a member of the vikings until he re-signed with them Monday since he was released for one game to avoid guaranteeing his contract.) I wonder what the offer was. |

7. Everyone -- including yours truly -- who suggested the Minnesota Vikings and Daunte Culpepper would be improved by the subtraction of Randy Moss should be beaten. I feel so stupid. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers do not beat the Vikings if Randy Moss is still wearing purple. --Jason Whitlock |

I know this week won't be looked at much soon, but as far as that jason whitlock comment, I disagree. You know how many games we lost with Randy? plenty. And it wasn't our defense always. You only have to go back to the final week of last season to see a game where our offense totally sucked and lost the game for us. |

It's never too early to say it: Football Sucks ... New England 23 - Oakland 21Jon
Some people really like Oakland's offense this year. Actually, a few days ago some guy was telling me how he wanted to bet on the over for this game. He wanted to borrow some money from me so I asked how much. You know what he said? "About $3.50." Well, it was about that time that I realized that the guy was actually 15 stories high and from the Paleozoic era. I said, "No, I won't give you $3.50"Sarah
Let the Collins/Moss era begin! Did you know that Kerry Collins is old? He was playing back in 1996 and before! I bought the '96 Packers tape at a garage sale this past weekend, so I know these types of things. I have a feeling I might be watching this tape a lot this year. But really, New England still looks unstoppable, basing this of course entirely off of what they did at Lambeau against the Packers. The Raiders could potentially be very exciting this year, and it should be a very good match up. Let's get it on!
