Lions 13 @ Packers 16 |
JeremyThe Lions haven't won here since like elementary school. That's really pretty sad.
MattGreen Bay Sucks. Detroit 23 - Green Bay 16
JonI want to pick detroit. I really do. But they inspire no confidence.
SarahI don't want to say we own Detroit in Green`Bay but..... |
Eagles 17 @ Commanders 14 |
JeremyPhilly really has no excuse. Although Minnesota played them close, despite playing awful, they will have home field in the cold. Come to think of it maybe that's the problem. Maybe they need to stop the home field advantage.
MattI think the 'Skins, by far, overpayed for Cristian Guzman, I mean he doesn't even play football. Of course he doesn't really play baseball either. Rimshot!
JonWhat was up with Washington last week?
SarahStupid Eagles. I just hate them sooo much |
Chiefs 49 @ Titans 38 |
JeremyLooks like I need this one. We had another week of all picking the same thing.
MattWho cares? | |
JonTrent Green is making a late run at MVP. Not really. But he has been having a good run of games.

What more can they do on defense Jon? There are more high profile picks on D than O. Our big free agent was on d. Every time a defensive player leaves they are snatched up and starting somewhere else. I think the problem is we suffer the growing pains (look how young our d is) then as soon as they develop they go else where. We are in good cap shape for years to come so we will be hanging on to whoever we want. |

Speaking of cap shape I found an article discussing Green Bay's upcoming offseason. I find this hard to believe, even though it is largly the system. "The Packers will likely be able to keep just one of their starting guards. They must decide if Franks is worth a long-term deal, or if they can get both younger and better at the position. And if they reach a long-term deal with Davenport, that could mean the end is near for Ahman Green, who becomes an unrestricted free agent in the spring of 2006." |

That's what happens to our running backs. They give the best years of their lives and we dump them like yesterday's trash. Edgar Bennett, Dorsey Levens, etc. We find someone better just before they get a big payoff. |

I didn't look it up but I dont think Edgar or Dorsey was a top 5-10 back, and they played when it was Favre's team. |

Dorsey did rush for 1400+ yards in 1997, and he made the pro-bowl I think, so for a year he was probably at least a top 10 back. Edgar never really did anything special, and he never did anything at all once he left the Packers. Although he was a very good bad weather back because he never fumbled; I think he went 2 whole years at one point with the Packers without fumbling, but that only gets you so far. I think now he might actually be the running back coach. And if indeed Ahman Green's years are numbered, he's had a good run, and he has already paid off. |

"What more can they do on defense Jon?" Answer: They could start to play well. I know they've TRIED to improve their defense through free agents and draft picks and whatnot. But it obviously hasn't worked. So the question is, will all of their efforts ever come to fruition? Will we actually see a good defense again in our lifetime? If so many are leaving, as you stated, could we have done more to keep them around? Will we do more in the future? Is there something fundamentally flawed about the way the team has been coached? Are we not finding the right kind of players? Are there such things as horse socks? Is anybody listening? I haven't done the hard research, but I can't seem to think of too many other teams in recent memory that have had this many consecutive years of bad defense. Even consistantly crappy teams seem to have a good defense almost by pure chance every now and then. |

what i kind of meant was that the rb's work really hard, put in their best years, suffer an injury, and then their back ups take their place. The back ups are so good that when they come back from injuries, they've been replaced. Not so much as a good bye wave. Dorsey had some very good years with us. Yes, Edgar Bennett is a rb coach, he was in charge of player's something or other, but he got promoted, I say hello to him every game. |

In years past we've had to decide to keep defense or offense and gone offense, the last 2 years and in the near future we will be in a position to sign whoever we want. I don't think it's a coaching problem per se, I think it's just the coaches aren't here long enough to make a difference. It's either here one year and didnt make us the best D ever so you're fired, or they go elsewhere. As young as the D is they need to play the same scheme for more than one season. If we can get a key vetran LB and a high FS in the draft I think we'll be ok for the near future. We ahve the players, they just make rookie mistakes because...well....they're rookies. |

So, I was watching some golf and a guy missed a fairly makeable putt and a fan cheered "Yes, yes!". Then the golfer turned toward the fans and gave a dirty look and acted all disgusted and offended. The whole incident made me think of "The Brawl" and the disparities between normally acceptable behavior for fans at different sporting events. Just imagine a bunch of screaming, obscenity yelling hecklers surrounding the 18th green at a golf tournament. I have no real point, it's just something interesting to ponder. |

I was 4 points away from winning a prize last week for my Best Buy football team. I finished 96th. I had Delhomme and he only managed 1 TD while the likes of Bledsoe had 4 and even Feely had 3. So close. |

that's weird about the golfers, especially because golf fans usually cheer for everyone, not just their favorites. And now the picks: Atlanta, Buffalo, Dallas, Jacksonville, Buffalo, Indianapolis, Minnesota, New England, Denver, New York Jets, St. Louis, Green Bay, Arizona, San Diego, Philadelphia, Kansas City Peyton Manning finally has an off day and only throws 1 td, but the Colts sneak out of Houston in a close surprise. My UPSET PICK OF THE WEEK: The Jets of Pittsburgh. Pennington is back and Curtis Martin is still good. Ben Roth fails to throw a td in yet another game and Pittsburgh can't decide whether to run Deuce or Jerome, and they can't get their running game going. Anyway, I'm picking The Jets to upset the Steelers in Pittsburgh. |

The Brewers traded Kolb for a young pitcher and a player to be named from the Braves. I like it. Kolb was good, but almost lucky good. He never got strike outs. He's decent but not that great, so I think the Brewers could afford to trade him for a younger pitcher. They still need to get some bats though. |

Dan Kolb set a franchise record for saves last year. Also, before the all-star Break, he allowed exactly 0 extra base hits. That's dominance. He's a ground ball pitcher, and that is his strength. |

Watch a Viking, Eagle, or Jag game and tell me how many roughing the passer calls you see. He gets more than anyone, so it's a fair thing to poke fun at. PS You should give yourself some special treatment once in a while. It helps alot. |

The only reason Favre gets more roughing the passer calls is that defenders can actually take him down compared to Dante. |

I think the Jags will take the Pack. Unfortunately the Lions will probobly beat the Vikings. We need a new safety and a couple linebackers, although our linebackers showed flashes of being good, all the shortcomings are mental things from young players. It doesn't help that injeries have forced us to start like 8 different guys there and move them to a new position like every game. Sign a stud linebacker to play with EJ and Claibourne and a saftey to replace Russell and a big tub of goo to play the run. |

Every team has had lots of injuries by now, that's no excuse. The Panthers have lost like 14 guys for the season and they've won their last 5 games. I don't think that last Eagles interception was a catch. He didn't have possession until he was out of bounds. |

All I meant is it's hard to have a young defense swap positions every game because of injuries. Realisticly though the Packers and Vikings are in. they would both pretty much have to go 0-3 to not make it (which obviously can't happen) and then have the 5-8 teams go 3-0. |

The Brewers traded Podsednik, Vizcaino (don't care if that's how you spell it cause he's gone), and player to be named to the White Sox for Carlos Lee. I don't have delusional hopes of a magical turnaround next season, but I like the moves they are making. They are selling high, which is crucial when you are a small budget team. Podsednik can steal bases, but really that's it. He hit .244 last year, not very good for a leadoff man. His defense has always been a weakness as well. With Lee they get a right-handed hitter who can hit for average and power. Him in the lineup should give Jenkins, who reeked it up last year, more good pitches to hit as well. The Brewers are doing it right, making small improvements instead of just signing a big name free agent. |

EA Games has signed an exclusive contract with the NFL. They are the only company that will be allowed to use names/teams. Sega (who Makes the ESPN 2KX line) thought they had them with the $20 games, then EA power tripped them. That's unfortunate. ESPN 2K5 is a great game. |

I think it was a good move for the Brewers as well. Lee has been pretty solid the last few years, with last year being his best yet. While he'll probably slip a little from that, he should be good for about .290/.340/.500 with around 30 HRs. While Podsednik will probably bounce back a little from last year, I don't see him putting up 2003 like numbers again. The best thing about this trade though, depending on what the White Sox do with the money saved by trading Lee, is that they seem to have hurt their team with this trade, which is good for the Twins. |

Podsednik.......rule of thumb for hitting: if it takes a player until he's 27+ to grasp hitting, his prime is going to be very short. Podsednik was a rookie when he was 27 years old, and as much speed as he has, he struck out way too much. He also is a poor fielder. In my opinion, he's barely adequate as a fielder. I like him though, and I'll be sad to see him go, but I know that the Brewers can do better, and they will. |

But that call wasn't even close, it was more of a light bumping into then a hit. I have a picture of redskins qb patrick ramsey from a couple years ago getting a roughing the passer call with the ball in his hand, against the packers no less. |

here's the picture, but I'm sure there'll be some reason why favre's was worse. Also, why does him getting a lot of those calls make it preferential? If Favre is getting hit hard, he should be getting those calls. Now I'm sure there are many times when other qb's could get calls like that, but that doesn't say anything about Favre. Get mad that they don't call it enough on other players, not because they call it right too little for certain players. Favre did indeed receive 3 roughing the passer calls in one game, it was against the vikings in nov of 2002. But here's an interesting stat. in that very same week, Michael vick and Rodney peete both benefitted from 2 roughing the passer pentalties in one game. |

If he gets a bigger share of them how is it not preferential treatment? |

I could name about 100 reasons why that is an incorrect assumption. First of all, there is not enough data to assume the Favre actually gets roughing the passer calls any more than other qbs. Also, statistics do not show how many qb hits merrit a roughing the passer call. Again, if the refs are calling it right for only a few players and wrong for everyone else, the problem isn't that they are calling right for the certain players, it's that they are calling wrong for everyone else. This isn't like basketball when Michael Jordan would never get called for a foul and would draw a foul every time he drove the lane. I'd say most of the rtp calls on Favre may be legit, and most rtp calls on most qbs are ligit, with exceptions of course. (Viking fans might say that none of Favre's are legit, but that's ok.) A 3 week sample from 2002 averaged 1 roughing the passer call for every 143 pass plays. Favre has thrown the ball 440 times this season. How many roughing the passer penalties has Favred received this season? 3? or 2? if it's 3 then it's 1 for every 147 attempts. Now that's not a purely random sample, so things may have changed since 2 years ago, but if anything, I'm guessing rtp is called more now than it was then. man, I wish I could find data on this, but I don't think stats are kept on individual penalties. In conclusion, unless you can actually come up with stats that says that the green bay packers are an outlier when it comes to receiving roughing the passer calls, the claim that Brett Favre is treated better than other qbs is not supportable. |

But factor in the fact that unless the pocket tottally collapses Favre backpedels out or no one gets near him and takes less hits period and those numbers are meaningless. Again wheter it's calling it right for some guys and wrong for others or calling it fairly for most but giving a select few a higher percentage that discrepency is still there, so I guess I don't get what you are trying to argue. If Packer fans can say the Vikings choke every year with no evidence to support that then non Packer fans can call it the Brett Favre Rule. |

They don't choke every year. Some years they're bad all season. |

So the Packers have either sucked or choked for the last handful of seasons too? |

name one losing season since Favre has been QB. They've had one 8-8 season, and that's not a losing season. |

Seattle runs hot and cold. I'm sure they will run hot for this one. The Vikes had another key injury, their big free agent is out for 2-3 weeks. This might kill them. Unless of course we get Randy back for this one rather than whoever has worn his jersey the last couple weeks.Matt
An old Jerry Rice vs. a hobbled Randy Moss. The NFL it's Faaaantastic. Or something like that.Jon
You know what I'm sick of? The Minnesota defense being bad. It's been bad for six years now. And most of those years it hasn't just been bad, it's been awful. There's no rule that says that having a good offense means you must have a bad defense. Certainly that often is the case on a year by year basis. But this has been half a decade of bad defense. Daunte Culpepper and Randy Moss will see their prime years go by with nothing to show for it unless the organization takes a stand and does something about the defense.Sarah
Seattle lost a tight one last week and apparently got screwed by the refs. Holmgren has always had luck in Minnesota....
