South Carolina to issue Christian License Plates
Other religions could get plates too. With a list of restrictions not applicable to the Christian plate. Likewise, no such "I don't believe" plate will be allowed.I'm not so sure SC gets the whole "prohibition against government favoring one religion over another religion" thing.
There's one thing though that I think the article sort of errors to sound a bit more alarmist than the situation really is. The way I'm reading between the lines the $4000 fee as a one time thing, so to get a truley personalized plate would be $4000, but if a group of Jews got together and coughed up $4k they could all get the plate.
The line "Bauer said allowing Christians to have a specialty license plate is freedom of speech. He said those who oppose are prejudiced against Christians." is classic. As if there's no other reason to be against this than hating Christians. As if people are trying to ban Christian bumper stickers.

Aren't there better things to fight about. Like bad calls at home plate maybe? God, this story has made me sick all day. If you can have Packer plates you should be able to have cross plates, hell if you want to pay for the logo and processing costs you should be able to have whatever logo you want. If you are dumb enough to shell out an extra fifty bucks for Hello Kitty on your car, so be it. Keep the prison costs down. Lame. |

The point is that they are allowing Christian plates, not allowing Anti-Christian plates at all, and restricting what could be on the plates of other religions. It's the favoritism that's the issue, not the plates themselves, as favoritism of any one religion is explicitly forbidden. |
