Deaf people want the right to purposely create deaf offspring.
I know this is a society where we're not supposed to judge anyone because "that's just their way," "No better, no worse" "Who are you to decide" and so on. However, this just seems so very very wrong to me. If you were to go up to your three year old child and jam a pen down their ear canals you would be imprisoned. Somehow before the baby is born it's your right to purposely make a child that's going to have a harder time growing up?What in the hell is wrong with people?

Who's to say they have a harder time growing up? Plus, if it's ok to pick an embryo known for a history of blue eyes and doctors, shouldn't it be the same? |

No. While the merits/morality of being able to outright just choose what features you do and don't want would be open to debate I don't think you could pass off a lack of ability as a feature. Choosing a smart child is different than saying "I have an IQ of 75, make sure my baby is retarded because I want to be smarter than my children." I guess you could argue that the deaf embryo has as much of a right to live as the other ones, but the fact remains that you're going into that procedure full well knowing you are going to create 10+ embryos with the hopes one makes it. The procedure being what it is (most of what you made will die) to purposely choose a "defective" child just seems cruel and barbaric, no matter how much you have yourself convinced your "culture" is better. Also, I don't think I need to do a double blind (ha?) study to be able to say deaf people have a harder time with life, especially growing up. Which is why I understand the special bond they must feel with one another, but to go out of your way to make your kid deaf just seems so wrong and preposterously selfish. Edit: And since analogies can never be what they are on the internet I'll calmly await the eventual "How dare you say being deaf and being mentally retarded is the exact same thing!" response. |

It wasn't really an argument, just a general statement. I'll refer to my "we should regulate child birth" statement on the "Look there's some middle ground here people thread. A Good Start. |

a href=http://www.webaddress.com>Your Text Here Add the opening arrow thing and the closing tag and you should be good to go. Or just go here. In the link, they tell you to put the web address in quotes (which is how I first learned it), but Jeremy told me once that you don't need them, so I guess you can ignore them as well. |
