Lengthy Study: Breast Implants Up Suicide Risk
9 seconds of thought: Maybe the insecure women who get the breast implants are more likely to commit suicide.Correlation automatically implies causation right?

Good insight - it's not like the saline or sillicone induces a brain chemical to produce suicidal thoughts. |

Well remember when silicone breast implants first came out? They caused every disease known to man. "I didn't have this disease 5 years ago, the 'only' thing that changed was getting these implants...the implants must have caused it!"

Um, the old sillicone implants WERE very dangerous to women's health ... maybe not every disease known to man, but a number of them, right? |

I don't think so, there were cases when they would break and the women would suffer adverse effects. Other than that I think the whole thing (the scare and them being taken off the market) was mainly mass hysteria. FDA Lot's of women "report problems" but it's almost always the situation I described taking place. |

I'll clafify - I mean health problems when they broke. Which happened often enought to be scary and make them illegal for quite some time until companies could develop a safer version. |

Sure, I meant that "intact" implants were blamed for everything using faulty correlation == causation logic. |

They didn't just have problems when they broke- I saw a documentary show on TV once about some girls who had jobs done. They're bodies attacked the whole implant and the reaction caused them to get deathly sick as well. |

First off, all those risks were known ahead of time. (That they could break, your body could attack a foreign object, ect) and people did them anyway. They weren't without concern, but there was a period of time where if you opened a medical dictionary and pointed to a disease somewhere in the country there would be a woman blaming her breast implants for "giving it" to her. I never said there wasn't one woman on the planet who didn't have an adverse reaction to them, just that they never gave a woman AIDS. (Though I suppose you could argue the implants were there to attract more men which would indirectly increase the risk of......nevermind.) |

There are several dozen large studies (containing information on several hundred thousand patients) from around the world which have consistantly dispelled any correlation to systemic disease or illness from silicone gel implants. A summary of a number of those can be wiki'd at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breast_implant_controversy Also read something I wrote on this last year: http://plasticsurgery101.blogspot.com/2006/12/what-to-make-of-suicide-rates-and.html |

Well written Dr., though I don't think it takes a doctor, or a study to see that a) Correlation != Causation (Causation is almost always VERY hard to prove, since science just doesn't work that way, but that fact doesn't make good headlines, I guess.) and b) that it makes MUCH more sense that the types of women that feel bad enough about themselves to be interested in a fairly invasive surgery for cosmetic reasons are at greater risk for suicide. In fact I would be shocked if you couldn't find a correlation between pretty much any cosmetic surgery and suicide rates. |

There is also a strong correlation between using != and being a computer nerd.

Just a serious question, since we have the ear of a doctor in this field- Does anyone track the return on investment (ROI) on breast augmentations done for "business" reasons? That was another part of the "documentary" I saw, and she seemed to be making all kinds of money afterwards. (She was a dancer) |

For those of you who don't want to waste their time registering for the article Carl linked to, it's essentially the same article. |
