Wisconsin beats Duke

Winner! And the Big Ten finally wins the challenge. Double winner!!

Wisconsin was generally picked to be low-middle in the Big Ten this year, but I think they already look better than last years team. They lost Landry and Krabbenhoft, 2 good players, but it's not like they were super awesome. Leuer has taken his game to new level, and has really impressed me with his post up game. Hughes has picked up his game and the leadership duties and was huge tonight. They still really lack a good shot blocker, but I guess I was spoiled a bit getting to watch Butch and Stiemsma for 3 years. Although now that I look at it they didn't really put up numbers either. I just wish Nankivil had another 2 inches on his vert. Anyway, after the Gonzaga game I thought Ryan Evans was horrible, and offensively I still think he is (well, freshman horrible), but I'll give him credit for a big contribution tonight on defense and the boards. Based on how some of the other Big Ten teams are failing to get off the block early I actually think the Badgers will be top 4 in the conference again, but if they do slide down a little this will be a huge win for them come Selection Sunday.

Huge win. Anytime you beat a top 5 team its going tosparkle on your resume. Thank goodness the Big Ten finally won this thing. Also got to give props to Illinois who came back from 23 to beat Clemson otherwise the ACC is winner again.

Stumbled a bit at Green Bay but they've looked good besides that. They lacked a 3rd scorer, which based on the lineup they had to put to defend GB's guards it probably should have been Taylor or Bohannon, who combined for 1-10 shooting. Add in a lots of GB 3s, uncharacteristically high TO amount for Wis, and some missed free throws at the end by Hughes as well as some bad overtime shots from him, and you get a loss. Really the 3rd scorer problem is the my biggest concern at this point. They need at least 1 of Taylor, Bohannon, or Nankivil to hit double digits each game.

Big Ten season kicks off tomorrow against Ohio State at 1 cst

Pretty much saw that Ohio St. loss coming from a mile away, but if they can take out Michigan and Penn St. we're still in good shape going into the second Purdue/Michigan St. gauntlet.

They just get into periods where all they do is pass the ball around the perimeter for 30 seconds and then chuck up a not wide open 3. Need more ball in the post situations or more driving. Nankivil and Taylor went a combined 1-9 from behind the arc, and are .235 and .277 on the season.

Seriously, I just about throw the remote through my tv and into Nankivil heads knocking him out cold so he couldn't brick any more 3s. Props to Rob Wilson though and a sigh of relief for stealing a win.

Someone needs to tell the Badgers they don't have to wait until the last 10 minutes of the game to start making shots. Nice comeback for Jordan Taylor though, I would have had him on the bench by that point.

It was a small miracle since they were down 16 with 11 minutes to go, but they beat them at Penn State by 20 a couple weeks ago, so...hopefully Leuer is back soon.

Yeah considering Penn St. is 0-7 in the Big Ten and the Badgers were 10-33 from 3-point range, it wasn't a very convincing victory. Over half of their shots were 3-pointers.

Very surprised to look at the standings and see 5 teams within 1.5 games, figured Michigan St was going to run away with the title. Big game on Tuesday.

Talks of Texas joining the Big Ten. That could help legitimize the Big Ten a little bit more, at least in football.

I feel the Big Ten gets the respect it deserves for the most part in basketball, the Badgers have been under appreciated during Bo's tenure, but even your run of the mill ESPN talking head is starting to point out how under appreciated they are all the time, which means they really aren't that much. And in football, the Big Ten just needs to actually get better, not be perceived as being better. From the little bit I skimmed through, it sounds like the move would make all the sense for the (in a way) lamest reason, money. I'd rather see them add a school that is geographically closer. And they need a new name for the conference if they add another team.

Well, a team like Texas might cause the other teams to actually get better, because now the recruiting needs to step up to compete with a team like Texas. All in all, I think it would be a win for every team in the Big Ten. And they aren't going to change the name. At least they shouldn't. The number hasn't mattered ever since Penn St. became number 11.

I'm fairly certain Big Ten schools already recruit as hard as they can. Unless your point is that better athletes would be more willing to go to other Big Ten schools for the chance to play against Texas, which I doubt would happen.

I'm thinking that if one team becomes that much better, it would only be natural for the teams they play each year eventually get better too. The same thing happens in baseball and teams in your league start spending. It's not that hard to figure that something similar would happen here.

Also, Mr. Cynical About Pretty Much Everything These Days, if a team like Texas ended up in the Big Ten, yes, athletes might be more likely to go to a Big Ten school because the entire conference is more legimitized when the conference has good teams. I'm thinking mostly about football, because I do think that big ten basketball is looked at no less favorably then other conferences.

And, if Texas comes to the Big Ten, that could bring in more money to the entire conference, which could increase the schools' ability to recruit.

Also, did I make it sound like Big Ten teams just go down the local YMCA to find someone who can throw a football? I didn't try to. But maybe your skills of reading things that aren't there are just waaay better than mine.

I could pretty easily picture a 12 where the 11 currently sits in the big ten logo. It's not that hard. And really, they've been talking about adding a 12th team for a while. They flat out are not going to change the name. You're messing with 90 years of history here.

Also, it turns out that Texas wanted to join the Big Ten in the 90s also, so this isn't really an "out of left field" idea.

I'm assuming you mean MLB baseball, but comparing college sports to professional sports in this case is pointless. And look at how Memphis dominated C-USA in basketball and how Gonzaga dominates the WCC. The other teams in those conferences aren't getting any better. I'll concede that there would be a small boost to the level of competition (and more importantly the reputation of said level), but Texas pounding the snot out of Indiana and Illinois (and probably at least half of the rest of the conference) in football doesn't seem helpful to anyone. Other than the money thing, but some of the mid level teams would lose a game in the schedule against other mid level teams which means less bowl games for those teams. And if they split into 2 divisions I just hope Wisconsin doesn't get put in the same division as Texas.

So some changes, like adding Texas to the conference or changing the 11 to a 12, are perfectly ok, but other changes, like changing a stupid name, are "messing with 90 years of history". How perfectly logical and consistent emoticonemoticon

They should just go back to calling themselves the Western Conference. It would leave people wondering, and it would make Michigan's fight song make sense again.

As for Texas, it's not happening, so I see no sense in arguing about it.

This team is twice as good with Leuer in form. Yet they somehow dropped a spot, to 18th, in the espn/usa today poll to Pitt. Meanwhile they are 13th in the AP poll. I have absolutely no research to back this up, but for a team to be that high in at least one poll and have a 5 spot discrepancy between the polls this late in the year seems quite unusual.

They are up to 4 seed in the latest Bracketology though. Root against Pitt, Villanova, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, BYU, New Mexico, and Michigan St so Wisconsin can get a 3.

Bracketology has Wisconsin back to a 3, passing all those teams I listed 2 posts ago except for the 2 in the last post. My head hurts. I assuming that is taking into account that Leuer is healthy now and they were 17-5 with him (6-3 without).

He also has Minnesota in and Illinois out now.
