The Nutcan.com Feature Wishlist
11/25/2007 2:52 am
Wish it had rss feeds of legitimate sites displayed?
Wish it sent reminders when NFL games you haven't picked yet were nearing?
(Let's pretend "make it so it's up at least 10% of the time" is at the top of everyone's list.)
Let this forever be the official feature request and discussion thread.

In case we rate the wrong comment or something. But maybe there should be a time limit. Like you can change within ten minutes or something. Cause too much revision can be lame possibly. Then again, maybe something is proven to be better with time. Of course, then maybe there should be some additional feature to reflect that you gave a rating originally but you increased it later. Or decreased it I guess. |

Ok, I've significantly upgraded the User profiles. You can upload a picture of yourself and/or an avatar that will represent you on the site. If you enter a myspace page your profile will show all the photos from your myspace page. If you enter your last.fm username it will pull some of the flash goodies from that website about what kind of music you like. (See mine for an example.) As you can see the "Currently Visiting" area has been changed to use said pictures, and also links to your profile. I will eventually work the information off your profile into the pages more, but this is good enough for now. Edit: FYI - I may have also broken many things, so let me know if you see something. |

Also, it seems like every computer I've seen decided the one thing it would cache was the css file, so you might have to clear your cache to see the "Current Visitors" in its intended glory. (They should be in little gray boxes, and not stacked on top of each other.) |

Also, Carl, since you can't see your own Avatar (or at least not the thumbnailed version) I'll let you know it didn't work. Don't upload a bmp. Put mspaint away for a moment. (Gif, jpeg, or png should be acceptable) |

At the risk of disclosing trade secrets, here's how I work the can: go to homepage expand Current Threads go to anything new in order of oldest first once finished on that thread repeat step 3 until caught up The link is nice because instead of having to scroll all the way back up to the top to get to Current Threads again, it's just click the link (and I guess I tend to keep my mouse in the bottom-middle of the screen whilst reading anyway) and click the next topic. Some threads are pretty long and it takes a good 5 seconds (the time for this thread, it's not even that long of a one) to scroll all the way back to the top. I don't have that kind of time to waste. For that matter, I'd rather have Current Threads expanded by default instead of Newest Posts. For that matter, I don't think Newest Posts is even useful, unless you want to ignore posts by certain users. The link font could be a little bigger for readability. |

I scour the can much the same way. This being the case, to streamline the process even further, after posting the next screen needs to default to the page bottom completely. |

I sort of intended the link to be tiny so it doesn't stand out too much. There's no real way to get it to fit in anywhere, unless anyone has a better idea. The current threads thing will be opened by default and should take you to the last comment that you haven't read, assuming you've read the page at all. By which I mean if you haven't read the blog post at all it won't jump to the first comment. If 5 new comments are on a page you've been to it will jump down to the first (oldest) of those 5. If anyone sees it not behaving like this let me know. I like that idea, though I didn't do it at first because the date on the Current Threads is (and makes sense to be) the newest content on that page but now the link might potentially go to a comment older than that date. I'm just afraid a few mental midgets won't be able to process this discrepancy and will instead be left furrowing their brow in a vein attempt to understand the situation. I think it makes it much more functional this way. Between the jumping down and link back up it should be much faster to see all the new content. |

Ha, I better get some props for this. I added a keyboard shortcut for the uber nutcan aficionados out there. Firefox users hit Alt+Shift+N, IE Users hit Alt+N then Enter to be walked through the site. Now you don't even have to know where you are or where you'll go. Just hit the key combo be taken right to the next New thing you haven't read and repeat til you run out of nutcanny goodness. |

For that matter, I don't think Newest Posts is even useful, unless you want to ignore posts by certain users. The link font could be a little bigger for readability. First of all I commend you for your bravery. You have now lost all of your edge you had in browsing but you added greatly to my understanding. Anyway, not that I think it's a big deal, but since we all like being dorks toward each other, you could hit the back button, which would take you to the main page where the current threads would be also. Then again, since a few weeks ago, that method has resulted in an error type blank page that requires another back button push (but just the first time you back up to the main page, not the others I think), of course your mouse pointer is generally closer to this new link, I guess this makes sense. Personally though, I don't like going from inside page to another inside page. I always go back to the main page inbetween. Just seems more tidy. Also, I'm glad the link looks better. And just because I pointed out that it sucked big time the first time, doesn't mean I have to get zero nut rated. That was a joke. kind of. Also, I like that current threads defaults. I'm not sure I like the automatically going to the post you haven't read. I generally don't like links that take you to halfway down a page though. Seems disorienting almost. But I see it's positives too. As a point of nutcan history, we did previously have a donate button. I think when we first moved to a different host, or when we became nutcan. (Is host the right word? does that make us a parasite?) I think Matt may have donated a cent. (Which is the most he's added to the site in years! Oh no I didn't!) Personally, though, I think we've more than proven we are a premium content website. We should charge. Retroactively. Anyway, keep up the good work suggesters, and Jeremy. Though, I'm a bit concerned Jeremy has just sat on his couch working on key stroke commands for the website rather than going to work the last two days. |

I really doubt it, what happens? I've replaced the "Zero nutty" X I've never liked with the nutcan turd. I've also changed something that's always bugged me, which was that the "zeroth" element shouldn't "light up" unless that's specifically picked. You don't rate an X (turd) AND 3 nuts, you rate an X (turd) OR nuts. |

Jeremy Wrote - 02/12/2008 @ 11:17:18 PM I've replaced the "Zero nutty" X I've never liked with the nutcan turd. I vote against the change. I think the fewer "turd" graphics on a page the better. I say maybe put something like a "null set" symbol. You know, the zero with a line through it. Or maybe an emoticon (non moving) that displays the "what the crap is this person talking about?" emotion. There could be all sorts of other options. Suggestions anyone? |

Would anyone like to see some sort of comment paging system? How would you envision that looking? Some of these longer thread count pages take a bit to download/render. I've looked into doing one before, but the practicalities of getting it to work with the updating and everything have stopped me. |

Edit: Your current options as far as nutcan content is concerned: x Newest Articles x Articles from the archive x newest blogs x newest links x most "popular" blogs/links/articles x most recent comments last comment from x most recent threads Edit again: Non nutcan content that's possible: Sports scores Weather Rss feeds from other sites |

All non nutcan content is fine but creativity should be done internally. Although, you could call it Inutcan. Or, how about just some articles on more current events/discussions. I really wasn't talking total overhaul or anything. Enron was a long time ago. EDIT: More newest Articles. Or newest blogs. |

Well, those things aren't really meant to be new, and are clearly indicated as such. The best solution would just be to have more content period, but that's not really all that feasible. It would be possible to rotate different things in that spot as well. We don't just have to pick one thing to be there. |

Maybe it would help to put current threads in the middle instead of current articles, and increase that to like 4 of them and then have the Gems below that, and replace current threads on the right side with an article section. At first glance then the site would seem to be more active, instead of having the 2nd most recent content being 5 months old. |

Well Sarah hasn't written an article since 02/01/2004 I'm not sure tax season is a valid excuse. Jon wrote one 9 months ago. Matt last wrote one in 04/04/2004. That said none of us are in the position to crank out an article a week, and unfortunately isn't there really any incentive to. They never seem to inspire half the comments/thought/reaction that posting a link or 100 work blog do. I do have a half written article though. my name @ this place is my email. |

I'm submitting some things for the replacement of the turd. I would have put them all in one comment but there seems to be some sort of recursive thing going on because the second file would show up as the first plus the second. (so it looked like the thumb, thumb and trashcan,...) Also, I got these from iconbazaar, so if we use them I guess we should give credit so I'm putting it down here so I don't forget. This wasn't exhaustive, but I'm tired now so I'll add some later if I find the will. Any other ideas? |

What is the nutcan community's feelings on unifying the nutcan content in to one big umbrella. That is, get rid of the blurred lines between article, blog, and link and just have one content management system. We could still section things off based on word count, or something, assuming that's even beneficial. Does the Article vs Link vs Blog thing help organize the site, or does the lack of a distinction between them hurt the site? Articles were going to be long in depth things, with pictures, blogs were supposed to be in between length, personal, "You'll never guess what happened today" type stuff. (Like for when some middle aged housewife absconds with your lunch. ) Links were just supposed to be "Hey, check this out." I don't think many people, however, notice or care about that distinction, and I'd like to add the ability to add pictures to blogs and links. I've thought about doing this before, but decided against it because I really don't want to turn this into a message board. I'm picturing one system that you could attach as many pictures (with potential caption), or external links to, as need be. What do y'all think? |

Crap, I had a huge comment then I went to look at our organization and went to different pages and never saved my comment. Probably for the best, I ramble sometimes, or all the time, so I'll shorten it up. I'm a separatist when it comes to nutcan content. I like having articles where we can present things with (hopefully) a little more thought, time, and work and organization to them. Blogs, like Jeremy kind of said, I look at as talking about things more conversationally, or little stories or thoughts from the day. Usually shorter or less organized thoughts or things involving sandwiches. Plus, it's a good place for talking about shorter "life-span" things. Like this week's sporting event that will be out of our minds by next week, when the next big event happens. To me, they're just too different to completely lump together. They are already kind of mixed on the front page, which seems fine, but I like keeping some distinction. And the links I think definitely need to be distinct. We're kind of just like a third party pointing to someone else's work. Plus, sometimes people just want a list of things on the web that other people found interesting. They shouldn't have to sift through a bunch of other stuff to find that. If I can attempt an analogy for the situation, I'd say it's like clothing. The articles are like your nicer, dress up type stuff. And the other things are your everyday or worse stuff. You can keep them in the same closet or dresser and that's fine, but you probably separate them within that, or if you don't, you at least don't just grab your dress pants, a t-shirt and your lawnmowing/yardwork shoes (does anyone else have these?) and wear them at the same time. Plus, the dressy stuff isn't for everyday (or if you have a job where it is, then substitute tuxedo or something), just like the articles come on special occasions or whenever we get the motivation. But they get their time and place. I'm not sure if that analogy is even appropriate, but it might be. I would say, though, that on our current sidebar, I would like our archives link as the last entry on our personal dropdown list of blogs rather than under the heading of blog authors. Also, on our articles I think the archives should be the last entry rather than the first, which I don't catch sometimes. |

Oh, one thing I forgot to mention. It may mean nothing, but I think the things we've got the most hits or comments on, for better or worse, generally have been articles. I don't know if that means anything or is relevant or useful, but I thought of it. It probably means mostly nothing since we could write the same stuff even if things were all organized the same, but I feel like I might not make the effort to create something more substantial or whatnot if there isn't that category for it. (Not that anyone comes to read my crap, it's all pregnant ladies and people wanting to yell at Sarah. Sometimes pregnant ladies who might also want to yell at Sarah.) |

Hey programmer...is there a way to include the "quoted" comments in the RSS feed. As is, there's no way to tell what they are referencing and you just get whatever was typed. |

The problem becomes that there's no clear way to denote what's quote and what's new comment in the plain text feed. I suppose I could play around with something like: -------------------------------------------------- Quote: Jon - 1/1/2011 Matt Sucks -------------------------------------------------- I agree! |

I wrote a review of those on the recipe website and "tore them a new one" so-to-speak and also critiqued the other reviewers. The review went into some sort of approval process and came out 1/4 of what I wrote and completely mangled. Apparently, it's important to read the reviews, and not look at the rating at all, because people who had ever had those things period rated a 4 or 5, 95% of the reviews by people that have "made" them were something like "These are so great, I used half soy sauce and half brown sugar, then I dipped them in BBQ sauce and honey, and baked them for 45 minutes" It's really quite baffling that people can be so obtuse. You rated a recipe a 5 then proceeded to describe the completely different recipe you made up. How would this be any different than giving everything with "pizza" in the title a 5 because you like pizza? For that matter this isn't a whole lot different than rating everything with pizza in the title a 5 because you've made spaghetti. http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Water-Chestnuts-Wrapped-in-Bacon/Reviews.aspx |

Jeremy Wrote - 01/04/2008 @ 12:38:31 AM Also, I just ponied up some dough to keep nutcan.com through 2013. Coincidentally, I've finally added that "Donate" button so many of you have been begging for all these years. Edit: FYI: Paypal will need to do some extra verification for donations over $2000, so let me know if any of you need help with that. Can we get one of those clocks that counts down to count down to nutcan.com insolvency? |
