The base of jobs in this country will always be America's businesses.

Um...duh. Thanks for pointing out the obvious and feeling the need to assure people the government is going to take over everything. I feel much better now.

What are our big trade items to Panama?

How are we going to double our exports? Start selling cheap lead based toys to Chinese kids?

Snap! Now we're taking subsidies to private banks and moving the money to federal grants. And inflating interest in public service jobs by offering debt forgiveness benefits. That was a fun 20 minutes of not favoring government expansion over private businesses.

I liked the section about less partisanship, and focusing on doing their jobs instead of getting reelected.

Maybe you could start by not being hyper-partisan.

I only caught the last half of the speech, but what struck me was how much it sounded like his campaign speeches. He basically said some of the same things he has been saying all along like we're supposed to believe him that this time he really means it.

Also, he seemed to contradict himself throughout. He says we need to cut spending, but lets start next year, and by the way, here is a list of new/expanded programs where we need to spend a bunch of money. He says we shouldn't look to the past, and we need to get past partisanship, and then blames everything on Bush and the Republican minority.

I'm not. I think my body of work here reflects that. I identify with the "Republican stance" on more issues, for what that's worth, which isn't much because it's not really defined anywhere. But I don't just automatically agree with everything a Republican says and poo-poo everything a Democrat says. I probably rail on the Democrats a lot for being "pro big-government", but I have previously voiced disappointment in how the Bush administration handled that aspect, among other things.

For what it's worth, I think his attempt is this: in order to "sell" his policies, he needs people to understand that most of what happened in the first year of his term was residual effect from the previous administration. For people to say "Obama is ruining this country" is just ignorant, seeing that the only significant piece of legislation he has signed so far was the Recovery Act. Surely that isn't responsible for the jobs lost in January, February, and March. But his adversaries fail to understand this, so it would seem. In otherwords, the more his critics continue to attack his policies (which don't exist yet), the more he feels the need to push back.

Interesting. I wonder if simply being the minority party flat out requires that party to differentiate themselves from the majority, and so even if someone from that minority party agrees with it, if it helps out the majority party, it can't help the minority party.

Need a 3rd party. Then politicians would actually have to run on a platform of what they've accomplished instead of trying to run on the "we're not those guys so vote for us" platform.
