Choose your at bat music.

Do you ever think about at bat music? I do. Probably too much for someone who never has any. I'm not sure when I became interested in it. Maybe a few years ago when I learned that players could choose their own music. (From what I've heard over the years, I think almost all players choose their own, although I think there's at least one player who just told the sound guy to pick something.)

Naturally, I've thought about what I might pick. I mean, you can go a lot of different directions. You could just pick your favorite song. You can try to pick lyrics that are really meaningful to you and maybe even carry a message you think is worthwhile for everyone else to hear. But maybe you just want a song to pump you up. Maybe you could find a song that touches on all of those criteria. You might even want to get clever with a song related to your name. (ESPN The Magazing recently did a thing on at bat music and gave examples where players did this.)

I've spent a lot of time the last two summers at local baseball games played by college kids. It's always fun to pay attention to what they play. It's heavy on hip hop and recently popular songs. But there's also the occasional country song. And the year before last, someone even had "New Age Girl" by Dead Eye Dick. You may know it as the song with the lyrics, "she don't eat meat but she sure likes the bone."

Anyway, I'm not hip hop-crazy, and actually find a lot of the lyrics ridiculous and stupid, if not completely worthless. I have learned, however, that the right hip hop song can be really good at bat music. One of the guys this last year had the beginning of Jay-Z's "Encore" played when he came up. Like virtually every rap ever created, I'm pretty sure the whole song is just about how awesome the artist thinks he is. Super lame. (Yeah I know everyone loves Jay-Z and hip hop is huge, but you know what? I don't like most of it. Deal with it. And even when I do like a certain line or verse or beat, the rest of the lyrics are usually so off-putting that the net effect is neutral at best. But this blog's not about that so I'll just leave it there.) Anyway, my point is, by the end of the summer, I was hooked on that 10 to 20 second clip of that song. It's got that mix that seems just right for walking to the plate: a good beat with a little cockiness thrown in.

For my choice though, I'd probably steer clear of the hip hop.
I'm pretty sure I'd go with something rock. The kind of song that makes you move. Not dance, necessarily, but something with at least one big moment that makes you want to bob your head or do some air guitar or air drum.

But before I say what I'd pick (as if I know anyway), I'm calling for some participation.

What would you choose as at bat music? And really, not just what song, but what part of the song? Because that's really what it would be. 10 to 20 seconds probably. Which is almost a completely different question than if it were a whole song. And, if you can, include a brief explanation of why you picked it.

I think the tougest part for me might be narrowing it to just one. If you spend enough time, you can come up with all sorts of ideas. I think some players rotate, but for the purposes of this discussion, I suggest trying to narrow it to one, and then giving two runners-up if you have some.

Now that I think about it, it's probably worth noting that a lot of the times that I can think of, they seem to just play the song from the beginning. Probably because it's less work and it sounds better since it's an organic beginning. So maybe just think of what songs you like the beginnings of.

Of course, there are songs that you could easily start in the middle and have it sound virtually seamless, so you needn't be entirely limited, but if you wanna play amateur dj, you might want to think of what it would sound like and make your selections accordingly.

Maybe PackOne will have something to say on this since he's actually been a dj.

I would chose the first 5-10 seconds from the song Dig by Mudvayne- the part where he just screams.

Then I would strike out swinging after only 3 pitches.

I would have it just do this part of the song:
He's got no power windows.
Got no power brakes.
He aint got no power nothin' but he's got what it takes......

Then clearly I would hit a bomb that just barely clears the 3rd baseman's glove.

To set up the criteria, I had to consider a few things when choosing my at-bat music. Go with something lively, or something with meaning? And what type of meaning? I wouldn't choose any of the 2 songs that use my name in them because they're kind of wishy-washy, which wouldn't help my at bat. I might choose the chorus of U2's Walk On, because well, walks are the only way I'm getting on base. Otherwise, I don't know, something with a good beat that would make me feel like dancin' and would loosen me up? I can't really think of the ultimate perfect song, but the first few seconds of Stronger by Kayne West, the intro to Island In the Sun by Weezer is fun, or go old school with Twist N Shout by the Beatles, or Gettin' Jiggy Wit It by Will Smith. I think I spent too much time on this and came up with nothing.

She really did spend a long time on it. She got her cd's from her car and went through a bunch of them, then looked up a bunch of songs on youtube.

My choice is so obvious, for a few reasons, that I'd almost be obligated to pick the song.

I spent at least 2 nights on this last week. My once revised list stands at 23 songs. Some of those have lyrics that would somewhat apply, some are lyric-less sections of songs, and some are just because I could.

If I really had to whittle it down to 1, I'd try to get myself in the zone with:

Bush – Machine Head – 0:38 – 0:52

Breathe in, breathe out
Breathe in, breathe out
Breathe in

Breathe in, breathe out
Breathe in, breathe out
Breathe in

For those dog days of summer where a little extra motivation might be needed, I found a number of Rage Against the Machine songs that start off with high energy instrumentals, top choice being Bulls on Parade.

And from the just because I could category...it's a tough call. Part of me wants to go with the beginning to Montell Jordan's "This is How We Do It", but I think I'd have to settle on Tha Crossroads by Bone Thugs-n-Harmony

Bone, bone, bone, bone, bone, bone, bone, bone, bone
Tell me what ya gonna do
where there ain't no where to run
when judgment comes for you,
when judgment comes for you?
What ya gonna do
where there ain't no where to hide
when judgment comes for you,
Cause it's gonna come for you

That's right Mr. Pitcher, here I come and you gots no where to hide!

Just going by things that sound cool for 20 seconds as you come to bat, Evan Longoria's song is awesome.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_EUvSN2guI

Jesus Walks would sound cool too.

Edit: This wouldn't be too bad for 30 seconds, but I wouldn't be surprised if 20 players were already using it

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnfFTVjRpLI

Also the Requiem for a Dream theme would make every at bat you had seem like an epic battle for humanity.

First of all, I'm excited that people actually put some thought into it and responded. I wondered if people would be led to think hard and listen to a bunch of stuff. I sort of feel bad, like I gave people homework or something. But I also don't feel as weird for spending time thinking about it and not being able to narrow it down and going back and listening to things.

As for this,

I stand by my comments. If not liking something that happens to be popular with kids makes me old, then I'll be happy to accept my AARP card.

Also, and maybe no one cares, but my comments aren't really bashing hip hop as a whole, or bashing people who happen to like it. I'm actually somewhat "tolerant" of other people and their musical tastes. Or at least I try to be. That doesn't mean I'll be happy about hearing it or pretend I like it. There's a lot of stuff I don't like and some that I think is crap, and I'll say so. But I'm not big into musical snobbery and laughing at people for their musical tastes, or shaming them for it or whatever. That actually really bothers me when people do that.

So, you like the Jonas Brothers? That's cool. I don't, but you can. I might make a joke about it occasionally, but I think it's fine. Country? Not my favorite, but a lot of people love it. Listen away. Screamo? I don't get it at all. Don't understand the appeal. But hey, if you like it, that's cool. Just stay away from the really weird scary stuff. I mean, I don't care what you think, that stuff can't be good for you.

For most intents and purposes, it's a matter of taste. I listen to plenty of stuff that other people hate. I'm not pretending to be the authority on what the acceptable music styles are. So I don't feel bad explaining why I don't like some songs/artists/sub-genres. Especially if it's relevant to make a point...you know, like how I'm not a big fan of a ton of hip hop, but still really like some of it as at bat music.

(One last thought on hip hop specifically. It's a genre, and a fairly broad one. My favorite bands are usually rock bands, but that doesn't mean I like all rock music. And it's the same with hip hop. For, I don't know, half the songs maybe, I don't like anything about it. For the others, I actually like a lot of their components. I like a lot of the sounds and the way the songs are structured. The difference with hip hop specifically is that I just can't stomach a lot of the crap that accompanies even the stuff I do "like." I just happen to not enjoy people talking about how great they are, how rich they are, how they have awesome cars, or how much their rival sucks, or how everyone is just a wannabe of them, etc. But it turns out that's the majority in hip hop. It's the rule more than the exception. So I'm turned off.)

I didn't want to quote the whole thing. But good post.

Machine Head is one of those that's on my theoretical big big list. I probably wouldn't ultimately pick it, but it comes to mind when I think of songs that have the right tone or mood in my mind. (One reason for me not to pick it is because I'm pretty sure it was either at bat music or general stadium music at Express games, so it just wouldn't feel personal enough for me. But I'm not knocking the pick.)

I'm pretty sure that "This Is How We Do It" was also used for some purpose this summer.

I was not expecting a Bone Thugs-n-Harmony reference, but it's a pleasant surprise.

Fair trade. I gave you my two day old copy of Lit's newest CD at the time for cash I used to buy 2 Live Crew AND you got the change (15 bucks cash, 9.99 cd). Let's face it, you did pretty good here. Moral of the story- that Lit CD still kinda sucks (one good song out of 13 or so) but 2 Live Crew is still hilarious!

Okay, in the spirit of true study of "Jonism" or what the popular media calls "Jonotology" I have actually done as requested and put some thought into my at-bat music. Although this is perhaps one the most explicit songs on the planet, it isn't terribly well known and has a clean version somewhere. It is a combination of hard-core gangster rap and I guess some deep-house and electronica thrown in for good measure.

It is best known as a song about sex, (as a DJ I know from other DJ's that it gets played in strip clubs alot) I think the majority of the hardcore lyrics actually are about guns (because that is so much better) and not literally sexual, although I imagine the artist intended it to have a dual meaning.

It is upbeat, it is tough, and it also is has an inferred baseball meaning (yes, I know they are aluminum or other composites but you get the point). In my opinion, these are three essentials in any at-bat music.

My 10-20 seconds would be the following:

"I'm an outlaw (I'm an outlaw)
Quick on the draw (Quick on the draw)
Somethin' you've never seen before (Never Seen)
And I dare anybody to get in my face

I got somethin' chrome (I got somethin' Chrome)
And I got it from home (I got it from home)
And it ain't a microphone (Ain't it a mic!)
And I dare anybody to get in my face."

The uncut version is pretty hardcore so fair warning.

It also contains these two lines if needed.

"Baseball bats (Baseball bats)
I got somethin' for that (I got somethin' for that)"

BTW, we should do this for softball next year. I recently bought an ipod (and got out of the stone age of where I have been for a long time) and portable speakers to go with them. It could be done at Stein Fields.

Imagine the other teams' reactions. Could be good or bad, but who cares. It would be fun, and that's what co-ed softball is all about.

I figured I'd respond to my own blog now.

If I really had to make a choice, I think I'd go with my favorite band, Switchfoot. It just feels right since they're my favorite. And it brings the added bonus of being a bit unique since their stuff is somewhat obscure, relatively speaking.

So I'd go with their song "Awakening."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkMu_rpdPYE

I really like the almost backgroundish sounding vocals at the beginning, then the drums, and the way it makes me want to bob my head along with it. And do air guitar moves.

I think I'll stop there for now. More song ideas to come later.
