2007 Major League Baseball Season is Upon Us

Check out the number of ESPN people have picked the Brewers to finish 1st in the NL central. Pay no attention to "weakest division in baseball" garbage, because no one cares. Look here and here for more evidence of analysts picking the Brewers. The Crew is again flashing the top prospect, and their pitching staff is probably the most solid they've had in years (see previous ESPN link). It's been 25 years since the Brewers last made the playoffs, and they haven't had a winning season since the former Bush was president. Next season is Now!

correct. Milwaukee goes in 25 year spurts. The Milwaukee Braves win the World Series in 1957. 25 Years later the Brewers get to the world series in 1982. 2007, 25 years after the Brewers last got there. This could mean something. |

Geoff Jenkins is currently batting .400 with 3 homeruns and an OPS of 1.221. He has never had a good start to a season, so this is a good sign. Also, my dad says he cannot ever remember any Brewer (not Yount, not Cecil Cooper, not Molitor, not nobody) who has had as long and hot of stretches as Jenkins has had over his career. What usually happens is that Jenkins hits about .230 for 4 or 5 months of the season, and then hits about .400 for 1 month. I hope this changes this year. But this is the first year I can remember that he has started as hot as he has so far. |

An OPS of 1.221!! Through a week and a half! That means he's on pace to have an OPS of 1.221 at the end of the year! I can't make fun of you too much, though, because I am feeling the Ramon Ortiz groove and it tells me he's going to be 2nd in Cy Young voting. To Santana of course. But since we both know the odds are against either Jenkins or Ramon Ortiz being anything significantly greater than what they have been in the past, let's just have a twins/brewers showdown by tracking who falls the least over the course of the season. The best part of this is that they aren't comparable in any statistical category, so we can be completely subjective about who's better. |

The Brewers are officially in sole possession of first place in their division. And, for all those nay-sayers out there that say the NL central is a week division, the Brewers have a 4-2 record outside their division. So take that. |

With 10% of the season completed, I thought I'd give an update on how things are going: The Brewers are 11-7 and are currently in first game by 1.5 games over the Astros. At their current pace, the Brewers will win 99 games. (As a fair warning, I'll probably do some "number crunching" that will result in some very unreasonable projections, but stat manipulation is what makes baseball so great.) Francisco Cordero is tied with 4 other pitchers for the league lead in saves, and he has yet to give up an earned run, (era=0.00). Also, he is leading the k/9 inning category with 16! In fact, there are 3 Brewer pitchers in the top 5 of this category: Cordero, Claudio Vargas: 3rd, 15.23; and Derrick Turnbow: 5th, 15. J.J. Hardy is just being rediculous. He leads the Brewers in home runs, rbi's, and BA. This is rather surprising, first off because Hardy is a #2 hitter, and secondly because he just isn't considered to be that good of an offensive player. But he is stepping up when they need him. The Geoff Jenkins/Kevin Mench platoon in left field is working wonders. The two players are a combined 28/72 (.389 BA) with 15 rbi. The Brewers are near the top of the league in many offensive categories, including batting average, hits, runs, and home runs. The pitching is struggling a bit, with an era of 4.25, good enough for 11th in the NL. But, they lead the NL in strikeouts with 143, and are 2nd in walks allowed with 50. So the hopeful sign is that the pitchers are getting strikeouts and not walking batters, so you figure that whatever problems the pitchers are having there is probably a remedy that is within reach. I'll probably report back after the 20% mark has been completed, but for now, that's the Brewers Report. |

Ok, I want to point this out: The Brewers have the best record in baseball at 18-9. The last time they held this position after at least 25 games was 1982 when they went to the world series. So, they have a 100% success rate of getting to the world series given the current conditions. |

Approximately 20% of the season is completed. You know what that means: Scott's 10% Brewers Update!!! The Brewers stand at 21-10 with a 5 game lead in the NL Central division. This past week was filled with things to be happy about if you're a Brewer fan. The Brewers have won 7 of their last 8 games including going 6-1 on their current homestand. They have also won 12 of their last 15. They have lost consecutive games only once this season and it happend during the first week of the season when they lost 3 in a row, back on April 4th, 6th, and 7th. They have an 8-1-2 record in terms of series wins, and the 2 ties were shortened by weather. As exciting as this start is, I am not buying my playoff tickets quite yet. I know what the Brewers are capable of as far as losing in the 2nd half, but this is a different type of team so far. The real test of their new winning ways will come later this week when they face the Mets at Shea Stadium. The Brewers have a weak schedule playing in the weak NL Central, so a test of the 2 best records in the NL will be an indicator of whether or not this Brewers team really is for real. Brewers 20% MVP: JJ Hardy. Currently batting .339, he is on a 17 game hitting streak in which he is 30/71 for a .425 BA. During this streak, he has belted 7 homeruns and 22 rbi. I don't want to project the end of the year MLB awards quite yet, but JJ is playing as good or better than anyone in the league. Pitching Numbers: Over that past 8 games, the pitching staff has allowed only 15 runs (1.88 runs per game). Jeff Suppan has 5 wins, Chris Cappuano has 4 wins, Claudio Varga has 3 wins, and these three Brewer starters are a combined 12-2 and a 2.77 ERA. Francisco Cordero is a perfect 12/12 in save opportunities. He has yet to give up a run, has allowed just 2 hits, and has struck out 20 in 13.2 innings of work. In fact, Cordero and setup man Derrick Turnbow have combined for 42 strikeouts in 27 innings of work. This means that the Brewers are averaging around 3 strikeouts per game in the late innings when these guys enter. That is a pretty devestating way to shutdown an offense. Left Field production: Kevin Mench and Geoff Jenkins are combining to hit .360 in the left field position. That spot has produced 7 homeruns, 20 runs, 20 RBIs, and 9 doubles. The Brewers are 19-0 when leading after 7 innings. It's a great time to be a Brewer fan, folks. Check back in another 16 games for the next installment of Scott's 10% Brewers Update! |

As a die hard Brewer fan and sports junkie, I would like to take this opportunity to talk about an often overlooked local sporting event. Although I don't have any video, many of you may have missed last nights barn burner in the Eau Claire European softball league. The matchup featured a highly talented Nutcan.com team taking the field against Fatboys bar. Fatboys, known for their over consumption of alcohol and tobacco products in game, took advantage of weak pitching and negative attitudes and handed the "can" their "nuts" 22-5. Todays fallout in the local media has many sports writers shaking their heads. Why wouldn't you sub-out your pitcher? Why waste energy complaining about your oppositions thoughtful strategy on red-lighting 2-0 pitches? This mornings epiphany should boil down to this - you got crushed by a bunch of losers with enough revolving Captain Morgan in their system to bring down a large rhino. Quit complaining, get the ball to the plate, and pat each other on your cute little behinds. Or, just power down a couple o' Camel filters each inning. Whatever works for you. | ||

We were beat by a team too wussy to just swing the bat in a non competitive, lowest flight in the coed league, game. We didn't sub the pitcher because no pitcher in this league throws for strikes every time, or even more often then not. You're there to swing the bat, not strategize on whether or not this would be a good time to take walk 25 and if you should take the auto girl walk option when up by a million. If you go into the game deciding you wont swing the bat you can walk your way to the championship in this league. No one was complaining about losing, we didn't play well enough to win, 6 runs won't win in this league and we didn't do all that well in the field. Furthermore, winning isn't the ultimate goal, we're there to have some fun. Hitting is fun, fielding is fun. Watching a team with their bat's glued to their shoulders isn't fun for anyone, I'm not sure how it was even fun for the "Fatboys." Though Fatboy's propensity for taking the coward's way out was obvious all game, we mainly were complaining about the Bush League last inning in which about 3 actual swings of the bat took place in 20 at bats. If the pitcher was throwing the ball over your heads, into the dugout, or at you, then don't swing. If it's a hittable pitch man up and swing the bat. Everyone in the league is here to have fun, not play small ball and take their chances on pitches missing the plate by an inch. |

Your pitcher - extremely good looking btw - was hurling meat pitches that made me salivate everytime I hit the plate. In fact, three of our batters that were a combined 0 for 16 at the plate this year, went 7-9 for with 6 'ribbies'. I'm not here to lob (heh on the pun) more fuel on the fire. I'm just pettifogging because I like to create with the best gift this world has to offer - words. I am fully aware that we are arguing the finer points of bush league ball. However, one must admit it's fun to take something so trifling and turn it into something that matters for just a second. For me, it takes a dream that will never be - and turns it into a small moment where all my "what might have beens" become reality. My own little SI feeding my narcissism. PS Fatboys is downtown - used to be the Diamound Lounge - block down from the Ramada. |

Ha. Even so, if you swung the bat at the 'meat' pitches and won 100-5 it would have been more fun, because we would have at least been doing something. (Incidentally is there a way to NOT throw "meatballs" in slow pitch softball?) |

a good slow pitch pitcher actually can work the plate a bit, working over the corners instead of hitting the plate dead center. Also, the height of the pitch changes the difficulty. A low pitch is much easier to hit hard than a higher pitch (in softball terms, not baseball) |

I probably don't need to comment here. I think Jeremy summed up the situation pretty well. But in the spirit of hammering the point home, I'll throw my two cents in. First of all, as Jeremy said, none of our complaints or comments, whether during the game or now, are out of frustration with losing or even because we think it was somehow unfair. We were just frustrated at the lameness of it. I mean, we like to win and everything, but speaking for myself (and probably a number of my teammates) I'd still come out and happily play every week even if I knew we would lose. In fact, the worst part about being mercy ruled isn't the actual losing, it's the innings wasted that could have been played. Which brings me back to the point: We wanna play. We signed up and paid money to play. If I wanted to watch people stand with a bat on their shoulders and then watch them walk around the bases - I could set that up. Believe me, I have the free time. But again, it's about wanting to play. So what you see as "bad attitudes" was mostly frustration with the way the Fat Boys team chose to strategically prevent us from enjoying a softball game. I don't fault teams for wanting to win. And I don't fault teams for taking a walk when they can't get to a bad pitch. But last night we all witnessed a lineup's worth of batters who decided to let hittable pitches pass so they could take a walk while the rest of us stood around. Completely within the rules, no doubt, but not exactly what we all signed up for. As for the pitching: we could sub pitchers all night. The fact is, she was doing fine. There were plenty of easily hittable pitches to virtually every single batter. A lot of people were up there letting pitches drop right in the middle of the strike zone in hopes the next pitch would land a couple inches off the plate and they could walk to second. But if people want to walk they can. If people want to hit the ball, they will. Our team was up there swinging. Not because all the pitches were strikes, but because they were hittable. That's how we like to play. I'm not saying it's the only way to play, and that we're soo great and that all other teams HAVE to play like that, but we find it to be fun and we like to think it's in line with the spirit of the game. Anyway, congrats on being the first opposing team member to comment on the site. Thanks for stopping by. |

Well, I must say at least we have seen some action today. I do agree with Jon on several fronts. I too think the mercy rule is pretty gay (or lame if your PC). I joined the league and paid just like everyone else. I'll agree that it wasn't fun as well. I personally walked 3 times last night. I also faced a 2-0 count 4 times in a row. The problem for a lot of us last night was the ump. Half of the time he yelled illegal before we even had a chance to make a decision. I came up twice with the bases loaded and wanted nothing more than to take a swat at the ball. Truth be told, I haven't had an opportunity to shine like that since leaving high school 17 some odd years ago. However, I chose to listen to the couple of die-hards on our team and red-lighted everytime. I am big enough to admit it was probably not a stand up thing to do. I really wanted to poke a grand slam, no doubt about it. I am by no means laying the smack down on your pitcher. This is my first organized sporting activity in quite some time - and I pretty much suck in comparison to most. Bottom line - you guys have a website, and like to write stuff. Hopefully, now you guys have our number and the next game will be quite entertaining. Meanwhile, I say screw the Pagoda's - we have them next week. PS This is my new favorite site of the day. |

Scott Wrote - 06/07/2007 @ 06:02:19 AM Wow, you guys should get blown out and complain more often. Look what it's doing to membership! It's not like we lodged a formal complaint, we were just clearly unappreciative of what was happening. At one point Jon went to the mound and said "they aren't swinging at anything close anyway, just throw the ball over the fence" She didn't quite make it over the fence, and I think the hint was lost on everyone anyway. It was still kind of funny. Even when they were up 22-5 they were still taking the girl auto walk on 2 outs after a guy walks option (which we never do, on our rare walks) and someone must have said "oh, come on." The dude on second said "What? She has the option." to which Brian, who was playing 3rd, replied "Yeah, the option." After the inning the ump informed us of the number of runs we would need to not be run ruled and Jon jokingly replied "How many walks would that be?" to which the ump gave a "yeah, what's with these people" chuckle. Edit: And, as said before we weren't upset about losing, we were upset about looking forward to softball all week only to be gypped out of an inning and a half. (The half being the half we stood there while their roster walked around the bases 3 times, the inning being the one their lame tactic running up the score cost us) |

I take offense to the term "gypped" as I have prominent Gypsy ancestry. We who are of German and Roma (Gypsy) ancestry prefer the term "Turked-out." Thanks, your observance is well appreciated. |

I know the origins of the word gypped, but I think it's so proliferated into our language that the origin doesn't matter anymore, if that makes any sense. No one says it as a shot at anyone anymore, 98% of people probably don't know it has any offensive connotation at all and 95% of the population wouldn't even know what a Gypsy was/is. Edit: In other words there's probably someone somewhere that would be offended by any "slangish" term, since most slang is started as a means to offend someone in the first place. At some point slang terms become normal parts of the language and we just have to rule a moratorium on your right to be offended by it. |

That article is great. Especially when they mention his 1989 upper deck card. I wasn't a big Griffey fan when he was mr. everything during the 90's, but I've really been rooting for him the last few years since no one ever seems to pay attention to him anymore. In the relative sense of course. When he was struggling through the injuries, people started to question his HOF candidacy, as if he was somehow on the bubble. Ridiculous. Apparently all it takes to wipe out a decade worth of greatness is a few injuries and some juiced up punks hitting a bunch of home runs. Switching gears a bit, the interesting thing about the Bonds story is that it's not completely inconceivable that he doesn't get the record this year. I mean chances are he still gets it, but all year it's been treated as a "when" rather than an "if" and for the first time, I'm starting to think it might be in question. The guy is at risk every day of having one of his limbs just fall off. If you saw him in the highlights from yesterday, you'd question whether he could even play the field in our softball league. No doubt, they'll still keep sending him out there, but I'm not sure his body won't get the best of him. I think he's at 13 this year, needing 8 to tie and 9 to beat the record. He's slowed up considerably lately and a stint on the DL could easily make this come down to the wire. That is, if it's not a season ending injury of some kind. And to bring it all back, if it's one thing that Griffey's career has taught us, it's that you can't count on the projected stats. It doesn't count until it actually happens. |

Well, tonight's game was not a good one to go to. Atleast I refused to leave early. And I also refused to get involved with the drunk unruly Brewers fans around us. |

Just for the record in tonights European league news, the Pagoda's were a couple people short and the ref called the game a forfeit. The Fatboy's pursuaded the ref to let some of their players play for the opposing squad and call off the forfeit. The Fatboy's ended up losing the game in the bottom of the 7th 4-3. WALK. |

Nutcan suffered a pretty heart wrenching loss. We were up by quite a few but they chipped away at our lead and we were beat in the last inning. Their pitcher had 2 homers and a triple, by my rudimentary count he accounted for like 11 or 12 of the 19 runs. Edit: Also by "call off the forfeit" do you mean a game was played as opposed to going home, or that it will actually go down a loss for you, because how is that even possible? |

Fatboy's will take the loss. We could have taken the option to play the game for "fun" - we instead in the spirit of competition decided to make it an official game. They only had six players and the ref actually called it a forfeit. The Fatboy's worried that we were not going to get to play at all, (This takes us back to the whole "wanting to play" discussion) offered up a couple of our players to make it an official game. The ump actually should never have allowed it - but - so goes the loss. I wonder if the campfire kids got a new pitcher. I don't remember anyone even getting close to a homer when we played them. |

I'm happy about your games and all that- but this is more important. We all need to go vote for Justin Morneau to go to the Allstar Game. Who the hell is Papi Ortiz, anyway? An NTAC, that's who! Kidding... Papi is the shhh but Morneau is great |

I went to Twins-Mets last night. It could not have been a better game. As I walked up to the ticket counter, some old life-long New Yorkers asked me if I needed a ticket and sold me their extra. Their extra happened to be a season ticket 30 rows up right on first base. They then proceeded to buy me beer and hot dogs and tell me stories about the Brooklyn Dodgers, Ebbets field, and how Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, and Duke Snyder all played CF in New York at the same time. They also loved to point out hot 20-year old girls, had a radio that must have been from 1954, and only heard about every third thing I said. I assume the Twins fans still in the midwest have seen him, but I had yet to see Santana pitch in person. Although it was weird to see him only strike out 1 person, seeing him throw that change up in real-life is ridiculous. Batters are so far ahead of the ball its hilarious. My other observation is that Jose Reyes has an absolute cannon of an arm. Anyways, it was a beautiful night for a baseball game and a 4-hit shutout doesn't hurt either. I saw one other Twins fan with a Torii Hunter jersey. |

PackOne Wrote - 06/06/2007 @ 09:26:22 AM As a die hard Brewer fan and sports junkie, I would like to take this opportunity to talk about an often overlooked local sporting event. That was a good day. |
