Super Bowl Team Rankings
Every team ever to play in a Super Bowl is ranked. The 1996 Packers are ranked number 6. That's pretty sweet.
On the 1996 Packers: "Surprisingly, Green Bay had neither a 1,000-yard rusher nor a 1,000-yard receiver. But it did have Brett Favre in his prime and five players who gained more than 500 yards from scrimmage."

It would be interesting to compile a list of the best teams to not make a super bowl. |

You mean teams that have never made the Super Bowl? Or teams that had great seasons but fell short? |

And to address Alex's point. If anything it would be more depressing for Viking fans than anything else. |

I suppose so. Except I kind of meant more than a top ten. Just like a giant BCS like algorithm to find the best teams, first of teams not in the superbowl and then regardless of superbowls. It would be interesting to see how often the "best" team wins it. |

By the way, if anyone is interested in debating this equation and also thinks it would be an interesting feature and whatnot I can look into finding the numbers. |

It could only lead to "well my team is STILL better than yours" type of discussions. I say go for it. |

We would need to discuss a preliminary equation so I know how indepth the data would need to get. |

Winning % * Strength of Schedule * Points scored per game/ Points Allowed per game * Average Margin of Victory / Average Margin of Defeat * yards gained per game / yards allowed per game * turnover ratio That would be a good start I think. We would need to add a "weight" so, for example, yards and wins aren't factored in the same. |

Yards are pretty undecisive. Time of possession would help balance that out. |

Yards per game / time of possession would be an interesting stat in and of itself. |

Though I'm not sure that is a good way to balance it out since Time of possession is a good thing to accumulate too. Yards per game / Opp average yards per game given up?? |

I think that would work out nicely too since that would factor out the "apples and oranges" comparison yards in the 1970's to yards today would be. |

NFL all time rankings by Franchise/Wins Not really what we were looking for, but interesting. Of course by interesting I mean the Vikings are above the Packers. |

That is rediculously outdated. It doesn't have Tampa Bay's super bowl win on it. I don't understand what the "Pts/game" stat is. Explain this to me. The Packers have .748 pts/game. |

I should hope so. It's fairly spelled out for you. It says it was updated in '02. I don't think I would call that "ridiculously outdated". I wonder what the updated version would look like though. It's missing Houston entirely. Maybe we can soon find out the updated rankings. |

It's also flawed in that the best teams get byes and thus one less attempt at a playoff loss/win. |

your last point is a good point. A bye should be worth as much as a playoff win, or maybe even more. |

Update. Nutcan now holds every game, and the outcome, in the Superbowl era. (Except 2006 Since it's not actually over and all) Unless anyone wants me to go back to the 1930's. Now I just need to get the stats for each team. |

Having Brett Favre on your team should be like 10 extra points per year. Bonus points for guys with nicknames of an inanimate object, like the Fridge, or the Bus. |

So there's a poll on ESPN as to whether or not "Super Bowl Sunday" should be a national holiday. As it stands, 58% of voters think it should be. More interesting is that the only state not over 50% is Minnesota. I'm not sure what that means. I voted no because it's completely ridiculous, mostly because they should have the game on Saturday if there's going to be a week off in between (which there really shouldn't be anyway). |

Interestingly enough, I was telling Jeremy earlier tonight about that poll and how ridiculous I thought it would be to make it a national holiday. At that point, Arkansas was the only state that felt the same way. I think we basically have enough national holidays already, but if I were forced to make a new one, Super Bowl Sunday would probably rank somewhere around 835th on the list. |
