Oh, and suck it Jeter! |

Most of the statheads agree that it should have been either Jeter or Mauer, and I think they are probably right. While I'm glad for Morneau, and glad that Jeter didn't get it, I would have voted for Mauer if I had a vote. Morneau had a good year, but other people put up better offensive numbers this year, and being only a first baseman, his defense doesn't count for too much. Besides finishing 2nd in RBI, the only real reason to give him the MVP is that he got real hot exactly when the Twins needed him to and came up with some big hits during their stretch of absolute dominance in June and July. While I give this more weight than others may, I still don't think its enough to give Morneau the MVP over Mauer, who led the league in batting average, had a high OBP, and a higher OPS than either Morneau or Jeter, all the while playing above average (maybe even great) defense at perhaps the most important defensive position there is. The fact that you can make a case for 3 Twins is pretty impressive. Someone on Fark brought up some "replaceability" stat that essentially said that while Morneau had a good year, compared to other 1st basemen it wasn't as great as comparing Mauer's season to his fellow catchers. Strong Bad? |

It might have been VORP (value over replacement player), I don't know much about how it works other than the higher, the better. By the way, my VORW (value over replacement writer) for the Nutcan is off the charts high. |

Shouldn't that be VORL? |

Does a pitcher count as an MVP candidate? Unless a pitcher sets some records, they shouldn't qualify for this award. That's my opinion. What's sad is that despite all that talent, the Twins went yet another year with a rather poor showing in the playoffs. When are they going to win more than 1 game in a playoff series? |

Yeah when I first heard the news from Matt, I was surprised that Jeter didn't get it, but I knew Morneau was probably the next guy in line. Then I thought about how Mauer really deserved it and then I thought that actually, Morneau winning the award was a pretty good accomplishment for him, seeing as he was probably the third best player on his team for the year. I would have given the award to Mauer. And I usually don't like the "pitcher for MVP" view of things, but I was alerted to this stat near the end of the season by Buster Olney (from his September 9 blog entry): "Johan Santana has made 30 starts this year, and in those games, the Twins are 25-5. He's 17-5 himself, and Minnesota has won every game in which Santana got a no-decision; if he hasn't won, he's given them a chance to win. Let's review. When Santana starts, the Twins are 20 games over .500. When anybody else starts, they are 56-54, basically a .500 team. When Santana starts, the Twins are as unbeatable as the '27 Yankees. When anybody else starts, they are a non-playoff team." Back to me now So I probably would have voted for Santana over Morneau also. Of course I feel kind of bad talking about this, because I really like Morneau. Two years ago he put together a half season that was MVP caliber. We all hoped he would break out the next year with a full season just like it but instead he was pretty bad. But it was amazing to see him put it all together. Anyway, Congratulations to Justin Morneau. Even if he's maybe not the MVP of his own house! |

Oh and Scott, they have won more than one game in the past. In fact, they won a series in 2002. And two World Series before that if you wanna go back further. |

Also, this makes it even more awesome that Jeremy dropped him early in the fantasy season. |

I know about the Twins World Series victories, but their recent playoff appearances haven't been very impressive. And I forgot about the series that they won in 2002. |

Um...why do they wait so long for these awards? I don't give a rip about the 2006 season anymore. I think I dropped Morn at one point as well. His average sucked. Mauer should've been MVP. |

Sometimes I love to step in the Page 3/Nutcan way back machine. I stumbled across this discussion which is both relevant suddenly and has all the classic elements. First of all, all the regulars commented, plus two non-regulars. Second, Scott almost immediately relates the discussion to the Brewers somehow. Third, there are multiple instances of people talking about completely unrelated issues, including at least one non-sequitor if I'm using that term correctly. The only real thing it's missing is Matt declaring that something sucks. Of course, I wouldn't say we're really MISSING it Bob. Enjoy. |

I believe you're going to have to recant that. The way I read it was the was for Twins winning accolades followed by the "/" followed by the for not winning the world series. Gets it: Doesn't get it: |

Clarification: Alex is correct in what I was thinking. Jeremy was wrong. Which is kind of backwards. |

By "Jeremy is wrong" she means last night went something like this: *Jeremy makes post correcting Sarah* *Alex makes post indicating he saw it differently* Jeremy: "Hey Sarah, Did you put the tears emoticon because you were sad about the Twins losing" Sarah: Yes *Jeremy makes post indicating Alex is wrong* Cut to 12 hours later: Sarah: "Alex was right, that's what I meant" Jeremy: "I asked you last night, you said it was a sad face" Sarah: "I was asleep" Jeremy: The moral of the story is "Jeremy == wrong" in any situation. |
