World Cup
06/11/2006 6:28 pm
Lets start with my McDonald's/FIFA/Yahoo Fantasy team. Basically I have little to no idea what I'm doing because I've only ever heard of about 5 of the players before. Thankfully they have the usual player distribution stats which I used to select my team. Currently I'm 13091 is the US and 109605 overall.
Honestly, if I had TIVO or DVR I would probably record all the games and watch them (possibly in 2x speed, but still). For those of you who think it's so boring to watch I'd like to point out a few things. One, at least for the World Cup there is no commercials except at half-time. Thursday night I suffered through probably a total of an hour of commercials to watch the NBA finals, Friday I only had to endure half-time while watching the World Cup. Secondly, while some games are low in scoring there is pretty much constant action other than half-time. No in between halves of innings, or pitching changes, or TV timeouts, or 40 second play clocks, or 3 plays a punt and a commercial break. I like it.
The US team plays tomorrow during the day, so I may be forced to actually setup the old VCR and tape it. I'm going to check online for the games that have been played already to see if I can download it though first. I'm choosing Donovan Landon as my McDonald's Captain, so I'm predicting a hat trick and a 4-1 USA victory. Do it.

Well, the US team just got beat down. Lame. It may take a small miracle now for them to move on, and I think it would be best if Italy and Ghana tie now, so put on your non-rally caps and cheer for a 0-0 final. |

Matt and I watched the game. It was pretty brutal. It looked like the Czech rep.'s game plan just completely dominated whatever it was the U.S. was trying to do out there. No matter how lame certain sports may be at times, when an event like the World Cup or the Olympics comes around, you have to watch. It's too bad that the U.S. team played soo poorly. People might not give it a second chance. I think that people should watch the NHL finals too. Especially after watching soccer. It seems even more exciting. |

And now the update you've all been waiting for: my fantasy fifa team is up to 4,918 (92%) in the US and 45,170 (??%) in the world. I haven't been able to watch much this week, but I'm on call this weekend anyway so I'll probably sit on the couch and watch all the games. Even if the US's chances of moving on aren't too great, they at least need to salvage some respect tomorrow. |

The USA vs Italy match was, well, odd to say the least. The US started off strong, but then was inexplicably foolish in giving up a goal, at which point I for one was pretty much expecting things to go down the tube ala the first game. Then Italy was inexplicably foolish in scoring on themselves, at which point I breathed a huge sigh of relief. Then Italy got a red card and was down to 10 with the US still playing pretty well and I was sure they would win. Then the ref went card crazy and it ended up being 9 against 10 for the second half, which was uber lame. So at least they got a tie and gave themselves a chance to advance yet. Ghana looked decent in their win, but really the Czechs played quite poorly and the 2 goal scorers for Ghana have to sit out against the USA. So it certainly seems plausible that the US and Italy will win and advance, though it's hard to be too optomistic win the US hasn't actually scored a goal yet. In the other matches this weekend Portugal looked in a win over Iran. This was a huge game for me with Deco getting a goal and 2 shots on goal, as well as Christiano Ronaldo getting a goal and 4 shots on goal. You can double won player each day and I had Christiano doubled which resulted in almost a 6th of my total points for the tournament so far. He's a lot of fun to watch because he's excellent at playing the ball, which as the announcers pointed out repeatedly wasn't really helping him too much, but it was fun to watch. Brazil won again in somewhat unconvincing fashion. As in any tournament the key is to peak at the right time and I think Brazil is still building up to that point. I got 8 points from the goalie Dida's 4 saves, but Ronaldo and Ronaldinho only combined for 1 point. Japan and Croatia tied 0-0 in a somewhat unethralling effort, and France and Korea tied 1-1. France got screwed because they should've been up 2-0 on a ball that was just across the line and then knocked out by the keeper. But it's their own fault that they weren't more defensive minded with a 1-0 lead in the 81st minute. I got a combined -3 points from Gallas and Zidane, but I had Thierry's 9 points doubled up for 18. My fans of US ranking is now 2537 and my world ranking is 26261. |

Soccer doesn't suck, you suck. Happy birthday by the way! Well, the USA at least scored a goal of their own, that's all I say about that. The Round of 16 was interesting, but I think it played out pretty much how everyone thought it would. My upset of the round was Mexico and they had a lead and took it to extra time but they couldn't pull it off in the end. I guess France and Portugal were slight underdogs and I correctly thought they would win. The Portugal - Netherlands game was quite chippy, setting the record for yellow and red cards. Everyone has been very critical of the ref, and he certainly could have done better, but the players were really going at it too. Portugal was my darkhorse to win it all, but with a couple players suspended and/or picking up yellow cards and C-Ron getting banged up it's not looking so good for them. Here's how I would order the remaining teams' chances of winning it all: Brazil Germany Argentina Portugal Italy England France Ukraine Let's see what the oddsmakers think: Or not, the site I went to doesn't have the lines out yet. I'll have to add this later. My fantasy team is doing well. I'm up to 828 in Fans of US and 10,706 overall. I'm somewhat upset though because the way I read the help made it sound like after group play everyone got to repick their entire roster, but that never happened. So I could've better used my transfers at that point for long-term planning, including not dropping Zidane who had a big game today. |

Drogba likely out after breaking arm, my brother is a Man U fan so he hates him, but he's quite good and this is a shame http://soccernet.espn.go.com/world-cup/story/_/id/5250486/ce/us/didier-drogba-broken-arm?cc=5901&ver=us Ferdinand out for England, maybe helps the US chances in that game, but if the US doesn't beat them we need them to beat up on the other teams so... http://soccernet.espn.go.com/world-cup/story/_/id/5250277/ce/us/england-captain-rio-ferdinand-ruled-world-cup?cc=5901&ver=us |

The USA just had the winning goal on what would have been a massive comeback taken away on a offsides that wasn't on a play where there should have been 2 fouls and a penalty kick. Hosed! |

Kind of annoyed that I accidentally heard the score on the radio at work, but it was still an exciting match. U-S-A! U-S-A! |

Don't forget to make your picks for the Round of 16, which starts on Saturday and ends on Tuesday. There are still two matchups that will be determined by the games played on Friday, but the Saturday and Sunday matchups are finalized, so you don't have to wait to pick the first few games. |
